Powering physical AI: Infineon and Bonsystems team up on smart robotic actuators

Internet of Things

AI is stepping out of the digital realm and into the physical world. Robots are evolving beyond machines that follow predefined movements into autonomous systems capable of perceiving their surroundings, processing information and responding in real time. Bringing this intelligence to life requires a robust electronics foundation; one that seamlessly connects the AI-powered brain with sensing, power and precise physical motion.

This becomes particularly demanding at the joints. Advanced robots such as humanoids integrate large numbers of actuators into tightly constrained spaces, while requiring precise and efficient motor control. Infineon and Bonsystems are therefore entering a partnership to collaborate on customer-oriented, design-ready robotics actuator system solutions. The initial focus is on medium- to low-power joints, with the aim of extending the solution to higher-torque joints in the future. The partnership combines Infineon’s semiconductor and system expertise with Bonsystems’ actuator platform know-how. This will help robotics developers evaluate and integrate solutions faster.

“The future of robotics will not be built by one company alone. Strong partnerships are essential to bring together the technologies and expertise needed to turn physical AI into real-world solutions. By combining our leading semiconductor solutions for motor control with Bonsystems' actuator platform, we accelerate development and make it easier for customers to turn their concepts into working robots.”

Changhyun Kim, Chief Executive Officer, Bonsystems Co., Ltd. comments: “Realizing physical AI requires actuator technology that translates robotic intelligence into precise and reliable motion. Bonsystems’ core strength lies in developing compact, high-torque-density actuators for robotic joints based on our pinless cycloidal reduction technology, supported by a drive-system portfolio ranging from reducers to miniature actuators. This collaboration marks an important step toward combining our precision mechanical drive technology with Infineon’s control and power semiconductor technologies to deliver integrated joint solutions spanning reducers and drive electronics.

Together, we aim to simplify joint drive design for robotics developers and reduce our customers’ development efforts. Through continued technological collaboration, we will help accelerate the deployment of physical AI in real-world industrial applications.”

Actuators are where a robot’s intelligence translates into physical action. They must convert control commands into precise, responsive movement while combining motor control, power electronics, sensing and communication in a compact system. Their performance directly shapes how accurately, efficiently and safely a robot can interact with its environment.

The design challenge is to coordinate reliable sensing, efficient power delivery and precise control to maintain smooth, responsive motion under changing loads while protecting against overload.

Such task becomes even more critical in humanoid robots, where many powerful actuators must fit within small joints and operate close to people. High power density, low heat generation, dependable communication and robust protection therefore need to be engineered as one system. A modular architecture can also allow power stages, controllers, sensing and communication functions to evolve without requiring a complete actuator redesign.

The Infineon-Bonsystems partnership combines complementary expertise to simplify the development of next-generation humanoid robots. Bonsystems’ compact, high-torque-density actuator platform is combined with Infineon’s system-level expertise in motor control, GaN and silicon power solutions, microcontrollers, sensing, safety and firmware. Together, these technologies create a highly integrated actuator solution designed to meet the latest technological requirements for humanoid joints while enabling straightforward integration into robotic systems.

Customers can expect scalable, design-in-ready actuator solutions supported by design, software and firmware resources, evaluation guidance and application examples to simplify integration into their robotics designs. Looking ahead, Infineon and Bonsystems intend to extend their collaboration to develop innovative solutions for next-gen actuator.

Physical AI will thrive only through collaborative effort: Semi-conductor companies, AI developers, system integrators, robot manufacturers and other ecosystem players need to bring their complementary capabilities together to translate intelligence into precise, efficient and reliable robotic motion.

The partnership between Bonsystems and Infineon puts this ecosystem approach into practice, helping robotics developers excel in one of the decisive functional blocks inside a robot: motor control.
