How does Lifetime Estimation work?

Estimating the lifetime of power modules considering real mission profiles is important at an early stage of the power electronics system design, especially in applications with long-life requirements where reliability and efficiency are  key for optimal performance. IPOSIM Lifetime Estimation (LTE) offers a cutting-edge solution that combines Infineon’s years of simulation expertise and unique device knowledge to accurately predict the lifespan of power modules.

 

The methodology behind LTE takes into account the complex interactions between power device, load profile, and thermal conditions of your design to perform power and thermal calculations, as well as a Rainflow analysis, to provide you with a comprehensive report with insights into your system efficiency, such as the possible number of power cycles. With this approach, integrating IPOSIM Lifetime Estimation into your design workflow enables you to optimize system design for maximum reliability and lifespan at an early stage, reducing the risk of premature failure and minimizing maintenance costs.

How to access Lifetime Estimation?

Lifetime Estimation is a premium (B2B) service that can be booked online directly in IPOSIM and currently supports over 8 topologies (with new topologies always coming up).

 

To get instant access to Lifetime Estimation, simply log in to IPOSIM and select one of the topologies available for Lifetime Estimation and the desired power device(s).

 

After that, you can activate IPOSIM Lifetime Estimation in the “simulation-type” step by clicking on the “Sign up” button. Select your preferred plan or start with our Free Trial.  You will be then guided throughout every step of the subscription process (for detailed information check out our User Guide - How to Subscribe).

 

Once the subscription process is completed, you can set-up the different parameters based on your  system design  and upload your mission profile. Considering this information, IPOSIM will perform the lifetime estimation simulation. Once the calculations finalize, you can download a comprehensive analysis report into the system efficiency including the power cycling, temperature swing count and lifetime consumption results.
