Overview

eSIM or eUICC is an evolution of the physical subscriber identity module (SIM), replacing a removable card with a Secure Element soldered to the circuit board. They both support over-the-air provisioning and updates. Our hardware and turnkey solutions follow the GSMA standards and enable cellular connectivity for a wide range of applications like emergency calls (eCall), smart metering, and devices in the field of IoT or smartphones, among others.

Benefits

  • Late-stage secured provisioning
  • Always-on connectivity
  • Dynamic handling of MNO profiles
  • Late-stage secure provisioning
  • Miniaturization
  • Future-proof reliability
  • High performance eSIM products

About

The IoT with its plethora of new devices calls for flexible and reliable connectivity solutions. SIM-based cellular connectivity is also highly resistant to security breaches by enabling end-to-end encryption and secured key exchange.

Unlike the SIM, eSIM takes up a smaller space, it is ideal for tiny modules, ruggedized devices, and rough conditions. Another relevant fact is that the network can be selected after the device has been produced, shipped, and deployed. Therefore, device manufacturers have the flexibility to choose what is most suitable for them, taking factors such as cost, coverage, and regulatory requirements into account.

Infineon offers a broad range of high-quality eSIM solutions, extending from eSIM hardware to high-end, ready-to-connect bundles such as OPTIGA™ Connect. Combining hardware with an operating system and optional pre-enabled cellular connectivity, it is the ideal solution for all cellular-based applications.

Since the late 1990s, Infineon has supplied more than 10 billion security chips for plug-in SIM cards. It has also supplied now over 1 billion high-quality security controllers for eSIM. In its role as a GSMA associate member, it contributes to drive further development of next generation eSIM standards.

The company is in an excellent position to serve the growing eSIM market thanks to its technology, quality, and performance leadership in the delivery of embedded security products and solutions.

Consumer electronics offer a broad range of applications, including smartphones and tablets but also smaller devices like fitness trackers, smartwatches, and other wearables.

eSIM is a suitable and cost-effective proposal for consumers. It allows users to simultaneously store the profiles of multiple mobile network operators (MNOs) on a single device, enabling them to switch between those on demand. Users can download MNO profiles without visiting an online store or physically changing SIM cards. This let them choose the most flexible solution for any given location. eSIM thus facilitates consumers to manage their subscriptions conveniently.

Thanks to the subscription pre-loading option, it provides manufacturers with new business models and opportunities.

Infineon’s OPTIGA™ Connect Consumer is based on Infineon’s certified SLC hardware combined with a fast, interoperable operating system. It implements all relevant specifications issued by GSMA, Trusted Connectivity Alliance (TCA), and 3GPP to offer full 5G compliance.

While car makers strive for the highest quality levels, mobile network operators (MNOs) focus on protecting users’ security credentials against theft and cloning. Infineon combines its expertise in security, telecommunications and automotive to provide security controllers that meet the quality and security demands of both automotive and telecoms respectively.

The eSIM plays a key role in the automated emergency call (eCall) service, which can help saving lives in the event of a traffic accident by automatically notifying the emergency services.

Infineon’s SLI security controllers fulfill both security and quality requirements in harsh automotive environments. In addition, it also allows OEMs to securely host multiple applications besides the eSIM.

Industrial environments are subject to extreme temperatures, mechanical shocks, humidity, vibrations, etc. Moreover, unlike cell phones, industrial machines must operate uninterruptedly. Manufacturers need to select the right quality level for their eSIM applications.

Infineon supports you in choosing the adequate technology for your application. Extensive measures like advanced testing or tightened process controls are set in place.

The SLM security controllers are tailored to the demands of industrial environments, certified to up to Common Criteria EAL6+. They provide a highly optimized feature set, a small footprint, and high endurance specifically required in harsh industrial settings.

Infineon’s embedded SIM solutions are available in different quality grades and form factors to meet individual deployment requirements.

Infineon’s OPTIGA™ Connect IoT is a solution optimized for IoT devices. It has a pre-installed GSMA-compliant operating system and is pre-integrated with a bootstrap profile for worldwide connectivity.

Offering a pre-integrated approach to connectivity has the potential to enable equipment manufacturers to deliver products capable of worldwide use, rather than needing to deliver specific versions for specific markets. Your end customers/users also have the possibility to change connectivity providers at any time.

Besides, the solution simplifies the manufacturing processes by enabling a single stock keeping unit (SKU) and facilitating global distribution.

Infineon and its partners offer their customers unparalleled global reach. Based on SLM certified best-in-class Infineon security hardware, this turnkey solution allows fast, easy deployment and management of IoT devices located across the globe.
