Overview

Infineon’s 2-in-1 solution enables more efficient REEV engine and generator control, lower costs and faster time-to-market. In range-extender powertrains, the integrated ECU coordinates the internal combustion engine (ICE) and high-voltage (HV) starter-generator to deliver stable electrical power and maintain battery load. The automotive-grade portfolio supports a single-PCB, single-MCU architecture with ASIL-B compliance.

Benefits

  • Lower ECU cost: 1 MCU/PCB, ICE+generator
  • GDI/MPI/Diesel; HV SG replaces 12 V batt
  • ASIL-B support; fast Infineon design-in

About

In a range-extended electric vehicle (REEV), the internal combustion engine drives a high-voltage starter‑generator that produces electrical power to supply the HV bus and maintain battery state of charge. Because the engine can run at optimized, near‑constant operating points, the system can reduce fuel consumption, noise, and vibrations compared to highly transient operation. The controller coordinates engine functions (air/fuel, ignition, thermal management) with generator torque and energy flow to deliver stable electrical power while meeting efficiency and emissions targets.

  • Single PCB / single‑MCU approach controlling both engine and HV starter‑generator to maximize resource synergy and reduce ECU cost: “2‑in‑1” offering aligned to the emerging trend of combined engine + generator control units
  • Flexible support for multiple engine types (GDI, MPI, diesel) and naturally aspirated or turbocharged variants: HV starter‑generator capability can eliminate the lead‑acid starter battery, reducing overall system BOM
  • Functional safety support up to ASIL‑B to match typical REEV requirements and complexity levels: Strong interoperability across MCU, PMIC, gate drivers, and power semiconductors (power modules and discretes) to shorten design-in time and lower system cost
