ModusToolbox™ for AI

Accelerate embedded software development with hardware-aware AI assistance.

About

ModusToolbox™ for AI brings hardware-aware intelligence to your AI coding experience. It gives GitHub Copilot – and other AI assistants such as Cursor and Windsurf – a deep understanding of your ModusToolbox™ workspace: your specific MCU, board support package, available libraries, and peripheral configuration. The result is relevant, compilable code instead of generic suggestions.

Delivered as the ModusToolbox™ AI Assistant extension for Visual Studio Code.

Without workspace context, AI assistants can generate code that looks correct but targets the wrong device, uses deprecated APIs, or misses critical initialization steps. ModusToolbox™ AI Assistant solves this by providing:

  • Device-specific code generation – responses grounded in your actual MCU, board, and pin configuration
  • Library-aware suggestions – the assistant knows what middleware is installed and what else is available to add
  • Skill-guided workflows – structured guidance for peripherals (GPIO, I2C, SPI, UART, DMA), connectivity (Wi-Fi, BLE, MQTT), RTOS patterns, and more
  • Project creation assistance – guided workflows to scaffold new ModusToolbox™ projects from templates and code examples
  • Reviewable project planning – before any code is generated, the assistant drafts a plan for your review – including a plan for porting an existing project to a different Infineon device – so you confirm intent before anything is created or changed
  • Tool integration – launch Device Configurator, Library Manager, and other ModusToolbox™ tools directly from AI chat

ModusToolbox™ AI Assistant supports a growing range of Infineon microcontrollers across the ModusToolbox™ development ecosystem, including PSOC™ Edge, PSOC™ Control, PSOC™ 4, PSOC™ 6, and TRAVEO™ T2G families. Device coverage is expanding with each release – see the VS Code Marketplace listing for the current, up-to-date list of supported devices.

ModusToolbox™ AI Assistant works alongside two other components to deliver hardware-aware AI assistance.

Two workflows:

  • AI-assisted project creation – for a new project, or for porting an existing project to a different Infineon device. This workflow is built around a dedicated planning step:
  • Plan – you describe what you want to build (or which existing project you want to port, and to what device); the assistant drafts a reviewable plan covering target device/board, libraries, and project structure before anything is created.
  • Review – you confirm the plan, or ask the assistant to adjust it.
  • Create – the assistant scaffolds the project to match the approved plan.
  • Add AI enhancements to an existing project – for projects you’ve already created; the extension deploys hardware-aware context into your existing workspace.

A local analysis component inspects your workspace (project structure, board, installed libraries, available code examples and tools) and makes that context available to your AI assistant. This runs entirely on your own machine; it only reaches out to fetch the latest Infineon board/library catalog, everything else is local. The generated context works with multiple AI assistants – GitHub Copilot, Cursor, and Windsurf all pick up the same hardware-aware guidance, which also helps in environments where IT policy restricts other AI integration methods.

Requirements:

  • VS Code 1.85 or later
  • ModusToolbox™ 3.7 or later (latest release recommended)
  • ModusToolbox™ for VS Code extension – installed automatically as a dependency

Install steps:

1.      Install ModusToolbox™ AI Assistant from the VS Code Marketplace (this automatically installs ModusToolbox™ for VS Code if not already present).

2.      Open or create a ModusToolbox™ project in VS Code.

3.      To start a new AI-assisted project in ModusToolbox™ for VS Code, choose Create Project → "Use AI to Assist."

4.      To enhance an existing project, open the Application tab and choose "Add AI Enhancements."

5.      Open AI chat (e.g., Copilot Chat) and describe what you want to build.

Example prompts:

  • "Create a FreeRTOS task that reads an accelerometer over I2C and prints values over UART"
  • "Set up BLE peripheral advertising with a custom GATT service"
  • "What libraries are available for Wi-Fi connectivity?"
  • "Configure DMA for SPI transfers on this board"
