Kwanghua innovative technology & Infineon jointly develop high-frequency, high-efficiency LED power supply solutions

Internet of Things

Our associated partner, Kwanghua Innovative Technology has introduced a single-stage PFC flyback LED constant-voltage driver solution. By combining Infineon’s ICL8830 controller and CoolGaN™ technology with Kwanghua’s deep expertise in LED driver design, the collaboration delivers both high efficiency and a compact form factor, fully meeting modern requirements for slim design and energy savings in commercial and residential lighting.

The joint solution is designed to cover the 50–150 W power range, with flexible configurations optimized for different performance and cost requirements. For instance, in the 120 W design, the solution integrates Infineon’s IGLR65R140 CoolGaN™ transistor, ensuring excellent efficiency, thermal stability, and long-term reliability.

The single-stage PFC flyback topology simplifies system design while delivering high performance. Key highlights of the solution include:

  • High efficiency at high frequency: Achieves over 91% system efficiency, reducing wasted energy and lowering thermal stress.
  • Compact footprint: Enables up to 36% reduction in product size, supporting slim and stylish lighting form factors.
  • Flexible scalability: Covers a wide power range (50–150 W) by combining the ICL8830 with different Infineon transistors, giving OEMs design flexibility.
  • Robust protection features: Integrated safeguards against output overvoltage, overcurrent, and overtemperature, ensuring stable operation in real-world conditions.
  • Practical reference designs: For example, the 80 W configuration supports 176–264 V AC input and delivers a reliable 48 V / 1.60 A output, demonstrating suitability for everyday lighting applications.

Importantly, the use of CoolGaN™ technology enables significantly higher switching frequency, greater power density, and improved efficiency compared to conventional silicon solutions. This makes the joint design particularly attractive for next-generation lighting applications where energy savings and compact size are critical factors.

By integrating Infineon’s advanced semiconductors into Kwanghua’s driver design, the joint solution balances efficiency, scalability, and reliability for diverse lighting applications.

At the core of this joint solution is our ICL8830 controller, purpose-built for high-frequency switching operations. With its quasi-resonant (QRM) drive, it can detect high-frequency drain oscillations, ensuring low-latency, efficient switching — particularly well-suited for GaN-based high-frequency operation.

Leveraging an SSR-CV flyback topology, the ICL8830 offers key benefits over conventional PSR designs:

  • Simplified transformer design
  • Direct output voltage sensing without additional discharge circuits
  • Reduced leakage current, BOM cost, and standby power consumption
  • Up to 36% reduction in product size — critical for premium lighting applications

Performance-wise, the ICL8830 ensures excellent power factor and low THD across a wide load range, while burst-mode operation reduces consumption at light load or standby. With its flexible startup circuit design, system developers can strike the right balance between cost and performance.
