P-channel power MOSFETs reducing design complexity in medium and low power applications
Infineon's P-channel enhancement mode power MOSFETs offer the designer a new option that can simplify circuitry while optimizing performance. The main advantage of a P-channel device is the reduction of design complexity in medium and low power applications. P-channel power MOSFETs are ideally suited for battery protection, reverse polarity protection, linear battery chargers, load switched, DC-DC converters and low voltage drive applications. P-channel MOSFETs are often used in consumer electronics, such as notebook, laptops, cellphones and PDAs.

A P-channel MOSFET uses hole flow as the charge carrier, which has less mobility than electron flow used in N-channel MOSFETs. In functional terms the main difference is that P-channel MOSFETs require a negative voltage from the gate to the source (VGS) to turn on (as opposed to an N-Channel MOSFET, which requires a positive VGS voltage). This makes P-Channel MOSFETs the ideal choice for high-side switches. The added design simplicity is beneficial for low-voltage drives applications and non-isolated POLs, where space is limited. The simplified gate driving technique is a great advantage of the P-channel MOSFET, often reducing overall cost.
