Driving multi-application & transport ticketing on open standards
Transport ticketing schemes are increasingly merged with other services such as payment, ID, access, and loyalty. Consumers want to conveniently use all these different applications with one single card – or, better still, with a smartphone or perhaps a wearable device. In other words, you would only need one card (or device) to buy your train ticket, grab a take-away coffee and get into your office building when you arrive.
Infrastructure providers need to integrate different forms of transport to support seamless transitions such as these. Mobility as a Service (MaaS) is one possible way of achieving this. MaaS combines services from public and private transportation providers through a unified gateway that creates and manages the trip. Consumers can pay for the journey with a single account, switching on demand from one mode to another.
Improving flexibility and interoperability through open standards
What is an open standard? It is a standard that is publicly available and can be used by any market player.
Open standards have equal, transparent terms and conditions – more commonly known as reasonable and non-discriminatory terms. The standardization body that certifies open-standard products is independent. And any product can be certified. Most importantly, all industry players and end customers, in particular, are free to join the standardization body and contribute to the specifications and the standardization process.
Supporting transport cards and tickets, these standards are highly flexible – also providing guidance for multi-purpose solutions and the integration of mobile ticketing without compromising on security. Built on future-proof security architectures based on Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 128-bit key length, they eliminate the fraud problems that compromise so many existing proprietary systems.
In addition to championing these global open standards, Infineon also supports numerous national standards.
