About

Distribution audio amplifier units, also known as distributed audio amplifiers or multi-zone amplifiers, are devices designed to distribute audio signals to multiple zones or rooms within a building or facility for paging and announcements. These units offer the capability to drive multiple loudspeakers in parallel along the line. High-impedance systems, also known as constant voltage systems, transmit audio signals at high output voltage, 100 V or 70 V, in order to use a thin, long-distance cable.

Most systems offer the capability to drive conventional low-impedance systems with lower output voltage and higher output current. Highly scalable and energy efficient Class D power amplifiers allow one amplifier to switch between the high- and low-impedance systems to address both types of distribution systems, making them ideal for commercial and residential installation audio applications.

Professional audio equipment is all about maximizing the output power and power density. Professional audio electronics used to be big, heavy, and not very energy-efficient. But with the conception of Infineon's MERUS™ multilevel Class D technology and gallium nitride CoolGaN™ e-mode HEMTs, it is now possible to conceive both amplifiers and power supply units with great audio performance and high efficiency in a very compact space. For engineers developing amplifiers, Infineon offers both monolithic and chipset solutions with versatile MOSFET combinations for scaling of output power.

Infineon delivers high-power, high-reliability, and high-flexibility MERUS™ discrete Class D audio solutions with Infineon's MOSFETs or GaN HEMTs for your distribution audio unit applications.

The IRAUDAMP23 evaluation board is a two-channel, 500 W/ch (100 Vrms, 20 Ω at ± 148.3 V) half-bridge Class D audio power amplifier for high-impedance distribution audio systems. This evaluation board demonstrates how to use the IRS2452AM controller IC, implement protection circuits, and design an optimum PCB layout. The board features 500 W x 2 channels (1% THD+N, 100 Vrms, or 70 Vrms) capability, protection features such as overcurrent, overvoltage, undervoltage, and overtemperature protection. It also includes a self-oscillating half-bridge topology PWM modulator with optional clock synchronization.
