TriCore™ is Infineon’s unified, multi-core, 32-bit microcontroller DSP architecture optimized for real-time embedded systems. Its ISA combines the real-time capability of a microcontroller, computational power of a DSP, and high performance/price ratio of a RISC load or store architecture in a compact re-programmable core. It supports both 16-bit and 32-bit instruction formats. Key features of TriCore™ ISA:

Memory & addressing:

  • 4 GB of address space
  • Byte and bit addressing
  • Memory protection and debug support

Instruction efficiency:

  • 16-/32-bit instructions for reduced code size
  • Branch instructions (using branch prediction)
  • Zero overhead loop capabilities

Processing power:

  • Dual, single-clock-cycle, 16x16-bit multiply-accumulate unit (with optional saturation)
  • Optional Floating-Point Unit (FPU) and Memory Management Unit (MMU)
  • Single Instruction Multiple Data (SIMD) packed data operations (2x 16-bit or 4x 8-bit operands)

Interrupt & control:

  • Extensive bit-handling capabilities
  • Flexible interrupt prioritization scheme
  • Low interrupt latency with fast automatic context switching

In 1999, Infineon launched the first generation of the Automotive Unified Processor (AUDO) family. These 32-bit TriCore™ microcontrollers are based on a unified and powerful RISC + MCU + DSP processor core. Infineon has since evolved this concept, reaching the 6th generation of the TriCore™ architecture.

The TriCore™ architecture, known for its high real-time performance and embedded safety and security features, is ideal for various automotive applications. AURIX™ TC2x combines functional safety and supports strong performance in a scalable product family.

AURIX™ TC3x, built on 40 nm embedded flash technology, is designed for ultimate reliability in harsh automotive environments. The dual frontend concept ensures continuous supply, supported by an extensive ecosystem that includes AUTOSAR libraries and safety software to help customers meet ASIL safety standards.

AURIX™ TC4x, the next evolution in performance, is manufactured in 28 nm technology. Like its predecessors, it features a dual frontend concept for continuous global supply. An extensive ecosystem, including AUTOSAR libraries and safety software, is available to help manufacturers meet the highest ASIL safety standards.
