With the Smart Power Fab in Dresden, Infineon is setting a strong signal – to Germany, to Europe, to the world. The Dresden site has for decades been the center of Europe's largest microelectronics cluster, Silicon Saxony. The new Smart Power Fab continues this success story.

The Smart Power Fab in Dresden is a major project for the future, in which Infineon is investing a total of five billion euros, thereby making a significant contribution to strengthening European supply chains in the field of microelectronics and cementing Dresden and Silicon Saxony’s place as Europe’s largest semiconductor hub. Already today, one in three chips in Europe comes from this site.

Production focuses on semiconductors that drive decarbonization and digitalization. Infineon chips enable energy-efficient solutions for automotive and industrial applications – for example, for powering AI data centers, expanding renewable energy and developing software-defined vehicles.

The state-of-the-art semiconductors of Infineon also ensure that:

  • energy is generated, transported, used and stored in a greener and more efficient manner,
  • people can travel more cleanly and safely, regardless of the mode of transport they use,
  •  things can connect intelligently via digital systems – the Internet of Things (IoT).

As part of the construction of the new Smart Power Fab, Infineon is also supporting environmental protection measures. Mitigation measures included the creation of additional habitats for protected animals and the reforestation of woodland areas. A dedicated habitat covering 25,000 square meters has been created for lizards on the Dresdner Heller. In addition, 26 bat boxes and 20 bird nesting aids have been installed around the plant.

Sustainability and the efficient use of resources are top priorities for Infineon. Infineon is already one of the most sustainable companies in the world. With the Smart Power Fab, Infineon is once again setting new standards for sustainability in semiconductor manufacturing.

This commitment is demonstrated by the Smart Power Fab’s aim to achieve LEED certification. LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design and means that commercial and residential buildings are , built, and operated sustainably, with high efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

Infineon Dresden is making a further contribution to the Group’s goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2030, as the site has been sourcing all its electricity from renewable sources such as wind, hydro and solar power since 2021. Furthermore, the company will operate the new factory entirely without natural gas – a first for Infineon.

Infineon uses industrial water instead of drinking water to operate the factory, thereby conserving valuable drinking water resources. Thanks to internal recycling processes at the Smart Power Fab, the water required for production can be reused multiple times. Infineon is aiming for a water recycling rate of up to 45 percent by 2033.

The official ground-breaking ceremony for the new factory in Dresden took place in May 2023; just three years later, on 2 July 2026, it will open.

The Smart Power Fab is funded under both the European Chips Act and the IPCEI ME/CT innovation program (Important Project of Common European Interest on Microelectronics and Communication Technologies). Total funding for the Dresden site amounts to around one billion euros. With the semiconductors manufactured in Dresden, Infineon is helping to make the value chains of key European industries even more resilient in the future.
