Villach, Ljubljana, November 16 th, 2023 – Infineon Technologies Austria and the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana launched “Mission Future Hub” as part of their strategic partnership in the field of power electronics. “Mission Future Hub” creates an active networking place for students, researchers and industry representatives to promote innovation for the digital and green transformation. Today, the cooperation center was officially opened in the presence of prominent guests.

In order to achieve energy and climate targets, there is a need for smart technologies, competitive innovations from Europe and highly trained specialists. This partnership aims to carry out joint research and development projects as well as teaching, training and networking activities. The cooperation strengthens the culture of innovation in the Alps-Adriatic region and expands the pool of microelectronics experts in Europe. The partnership is part of Infineon Austria's spillover engagement in the Important Project of Common European Interest on Microelectronics (IPCEI ME).

Sabine Herlitschka, CEO of Infineon Technologies Austria AG: “Climate change knows no borders. More than ever, cooperation is needed to develop solutions for the green and digital transformation and to make Europe more competitive. With microelectronics, we have a key technology for decarbonization and digitalization at hand, with enormous potential for further global innovations. This is our ‘Mission Future’ and we are pleased to have an excellent partner in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering at the University of Ljubljana to drive this mission forward with us. As Infineon Austria, we are contributing our extensive expertise in research, development and manufacturing of energy-saving chips, as well as our comprehensive educational activities for more than 100,000 young people over recent years. The ‘Mission Future Hub’ is a center for creative ideas and tech talents who want to make a sustainable difference.”

Igor Papič, Minister of Higher Education, Science and Innovation: “The effects of climate change have also been felt in Slovenia through the unprecedented severity of natural events. So, both the green and digital transition are essential if we are to preserve nature and move our country forward. Cooperation between Slovenia and Austria is thus an excellent opportunity to harness the knowledge triangle, which is central to the green and digital transition, as it links higher education, science and innovation. More importantly, it involves not only established professionals, but also students who will gain valuable experience and knowledge, as well as the awareness that they can play an active role in shaping the future.”

Dr. Emilija Stojmenova Duh, Minister of Digital Transformation: "With the European Chips Act, adopted by the Council in July this year, we want to strengthen Europe’s research and technology leadership towards smaller and faster chips, increase production capacity to 20% of the global market by 2030, reinforce capacity to innovate in the design and manufacturing of advanced chips and attract new talent and skilled workforce. Regardless of our country’s size, Slovenian researchers and companies are already highly active in advanced semiconductor technologies and microelectronics and collaborate with important partners at the global scale. The University of Ljubljana and Infineon Austria are a good example of this cooperation. The Slovenian government assures its strong support to this initiative and cross-border cooperation."

Prof. Andrej Kos, head of Laboratory of Telecommunications at Faculty of Electrical Engineering, University of Ljubljana: “The strategy of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering includes modern study programmes, research excellence and close cooperation with companies in terms of projects and trainings. Long-term regional and international cooperation in high-tech fields is very important for the faculty. This is how we constantly improve the educational process and incorporate top-notch research into our operations. In the field of integrating modern innovative approaches into all areas of the faculty's activities, we started working intensively more than 10 years ago, when we founded the first open laboratory at the University of Ljubljana - Makerlab. And it is in this direction that we are taking new steps of cooperation with Infineon.”

From energy efficiency and e-mobility to quantum research
The joint research and education areas focus on power electronics and are thus a core element for issues such as energy efficiency, renewable energies, electromobility, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things and quantum research. Training programs specifically geared to power electronics will be developed to increase the pool of STEM graduates in Europe. In addition, Infineon Austria offers students practical workshops, participation in Infineon Schools, support for bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral theses, scholarships and industrial internships as part of IPCEI.

Innovation and network platform
The Infineon “Mission Future Hub” at the University of Ljubljana will also create an attractive collaboration and event center. This offers students, technology talents, companies and start-ups a valuable platform to exchange ideas, learn, build networks and bring ideas to life. Joint projects can lead to new developments for climate change and new business models. This promotes the jobs of the future and strengthens the culture of innovation in the Alps-Adriatic region.

High-level participation from business and public authorities
High-ranking guests from business and public authorities attended the “Mission Future Hub” opening event. The Austrian Ambassador Elisabeth Ellison-Kramer, the executive director of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry Marjana Majeri č and Claudia Angermayr from the Austrian Economic Chamber took the opportunity to exchange and network with students and experts from science and industry.
