About

A power supply unit (PSU) is an essential component, providing the energy and stability needed for the reliable operation of your entire system. Infineon addresses this with a complete system solution for server power supdesigned to meet the demands of modern server and data center SMPS applications handling generative AI tasks.

Our solutions for server power supply feature a range of advanced technologies, including CoolMOS™ high-voltage MOSFETs, OptiMOS™ low-voltage MOSFETs, EiceDRIVER™ gate drivers, XMC™ series microcontrollers, and CoolSET™ auxiliary power controllers. Together, these components create a complete, efficient system solution tailored to meet your power supply needs.

The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI)  has significantly increased the demand for processing power in data centers, placing greater strain on server power supply units (PSUs). This growing demand has driven server rack designs to adapt, emphasizing higher power output, better energy efficiency, and greater power density to handle modern workloads. Our CoolSiC™ and CoolGaN™ technologies are at the forefront of this transformation, offering groundbreaking solutions that set new industry benchmarks in PSU designs for AI factories.

These advanced technologies not only support the growing power requirements but also enable higher performance, reduced energy consumption, and compact designs that maximize rack space utilization. By leveraging these innovations, data centers can achieve scalable, sustainable, and future-proof server power supply solutions, meeting the needs of both current and emerging applications.

Infineon also leverages state-of-the-art wide bandgap technology in server SMPS designs.

For example, our CoolSiC™ MOSFETs bring a lot to the table. Outside of the obvious performance increases, it also provides robustness and reliability with, for example, gate oxide reliability, a body diode rated for hard commutation, and avalanche capability. Further, CoolSiC™ brings ease of use with a wide VGS range and 0 V turn-off VGS.

Alternatively, our gallium nitride based CoolGaN™ HEMTs have outstanding figures of merit that deliver huge benefits. Gallium nitride, by itself, offers 10x higher breakdown field, 2x higher mobility, 10x lower output charge, zero reverse recovery charge, and 10x lower gate charge and linear COSS. Additionally, in terms of technical benefits, we also see very low RDS(ON) and large cost-down potential, better efficiency in resonant circuits, the possibility of new topologies and current modulation, and fast and near lossless switching. End-user benefits include smaller and lighter designs, higher efficiency, and lower system cost.

In addition to the discretes themselves, we also offer gate drivers specifically designed to function with them.

Infineon’s extensive range of power device technologies—Si, SiC, and GaN—combined with optimized gate-driver ICs, delivers robust support for current and next-generation platforms. By integrating these three technologies in a hybrid approach, PSU designs achieve optimal flexibility while balancing efficiency, power density, and system costs.
