Villach, Innsbruck, July 12, 2023 - The existing cooperation in power electronics and the pioneering field of quantum research will be further expanded. Today, the strategic cooperation agreement was signed. The focus is on research into key technologies for the green and digital transformation or the life science sector, such as for medical technology. Infineon is thus strengthening its presence in western Austria.

"Semiconductors are the backbone of modern life and an enormous lever for decarbonization and digitalization. In order to be able to develop the best possible answers for climate, energy or life science issues, intensive knowledge and know-how cooperation between industry and universities is more important than ever. The endowed professorship for power electronics we initiated in Innsbruck has been providing unique impetus for university education in this essential key technology since 2014. With this strategic partnership, we are now taking the next step in our collaboration. We are strengthening research and enabling top training. This is another very concrete measure to address the shortage of skilled workers in technology," emphasizes Sabine Herlitschka, CEO of Infineon Technologies Austria AG.

Close in terms of expertise and location
Research projects relating to efficient energy conversion, robotics, electromobility or digital systems for the life sciences and medical technology will become increasingly possible in the coming years as a result of the partnership. For close scientific cooperation Infineon is also moving closer spatially. In the Pema-3 tower, near the university on Südbahnstraße, space is currently being adapted for an Infineon System Competence Center. The innovation lab will be used for developing initial demonstrators and for networking technical talent. The move-in is scheduled for this fall.

Innovation Hub in the West of Austria
Infineon Austria and the University of Innsbruck have been cooperating for about 10 years. Through the endowed professorship funded by Infineon, the competence building by Prof. Petar Grbović and the implementation of the Power Electronics Lab, it was possible to establish excellent academic teaching as well as an outstanding environment for power electronics. The research for the quantum computer of the future, which has been ongoing since 2018, is promising and the young scientists are trained in a practical way. Currently, around 20 researchers from the University of Innsbruck are working at Infineon.

"With Infineon Austria, the University of Innsbruck has gained a strong partner from the semiconductor industry. This cooperation has developed very well in recent years and has been continuously expanded. There is now already an in-depth exchange with several departments. Research and students benefit from this collaboration with industry," says Veronika Sexl, Rector of the University of Innsbruck. "We want to continue on this path in the coming years and also expand the cooperation. After all, this close exchange between basic research and applied research is needed for the rapid solution of many urgent questions of the future."

Gregor Weihs, Vice Rector for Research at the University of Innsbruck adds: "The first Infineon endowed professorship in Austria has been established at the University of Innsbruck. With Petar Grbović, an internationally successful expert in the field of power electronics could be appointed. Numerous articles in internationally renowned journals as well as presentations of the extremely innovative research work at international conferences testify to the successful start of this new focus, which is important for the Faculty of Technical Sciences."

Students benefit
Students at the University of Innsbruck benefit from Infineon in many ways, be it in industrial internships through participation in Infineon Schools, support for master's and doctoral theses as well as know-how transfer through practical insights and lectures by Infineon experts. The skills of graduates are strengthened for the future, and the shortage of skilled workers is actively addressed.

Infineon Technologies Austria AG is a group subsidiary of Infineon Technologies AG, a world-leading provider of semiconductor solutions that make life easier, safer and greener.
