eCall - Emergency call
Life-saving technology onboard
The automated emergency call feature eCall can help save lives in the event of a traffic accident. Following a car crash, the technology automatically notifies emergency services. This allows them to arrive on the scene and provide medical assistance, faster. eCall also ensures serious accidents don’t go unnoticed. On March 31, 2018, eCall became a mandatory feature in all new cars and light commercial vehicles in the European Union. As a result, the feature will be integrated into up to 20 million new vehicles annually.
How eCall works
In the event of an accident, eCall independently sends an emergency voice and data message to the emergency call center via the cellular network. The message includes information on the car’s location, the precise time of the accident and the number of passengers onboard.
The European Commission predicts eCall can* reduce emergency response time by 50% in rural and by 40% in urban areas. By arriving on the scene earlier, any injuries severity can be reduced by 15%. In addition to saving around 2,500 lives annually in the EU, eCall can decrease the financial impact caused by traffic accident by up to €160 billion each year.
Linking the automotive and telecommunication worlds
In connected cars, like those featuring eCall, the subscriber identity module (SIM) is the link between the automotive and the telecommunication worlds. The SIM must meet the automotive industry’s high quality standards and fulfill the Mobile Network Operators’ (MNOs) high security requirements. In order to increase flexibility and provide better customer service, the MNO providing the cellular connection can be exchanged over the air on behalf of the OEM. This increases the security requirements because the MNOs have to provide their credentials to a SIM they do not own and control, so they must trust the device’s security. Trust is based on independent third parties assessments according to the Common Criteria standard.

The SLI 76 and SLI 97 security controllers are Infineon’s response to changing market needs. The security controllers fully comply with SIM requirements as defined by GSMA and ETSI international standards organizations.
