About

When the integrated starter generator (ISG) is mounted in a P2-P5 configuration on the driveline, it offers several significant advantages that overcome the cost disadvantage of the small size high-power density electric machine. Firstly, it provides higher electrical power and improved electrical efficiency during recuperation, allowing for better energy regeneration. Additionally, it can recuperate electrical energy even when the engine is off during coasting.

Moreover, the driveline starter generator enables short-distance pure electrical drive, contributing to reduced emissions and an eco-friendly driving experience. Due to size limitations and high-power density, the electric machine in most cases is a permanent magnet synchronous type with a maximum peak power >20 kW. The P3-P5 configurations are the most energy-efficient since they eliminate engine and transmission friction losses when the driveline is disconnected.

Infineon offers a complete and highly integrated system solution designed to save space. The solution includes a wide range of components such as supply ICs, microcontrollers, sensors, smart power drivers, high-power MOSFETs, and transceivers. It offers higher electrical power and improved electrical efficiency during recuperation, allowing for better energy regeneration, and it can recuperate electrical energy even when the engine is off during coasting.

To meet safety requirements, the key components, namely the microcontroller, power management integrated circuit (PMIC), and three-phase gate driver, comply with ISO 26262 ASIL-D standards. This ensures that the system meets high safety levels for automotive applications.
