Innsbruck, Villach, 14 September 2023 - The new competence center is developing initial reference systems, for example for electromobility, life science, renewable energies or robotics, in order to bring innovative applications to market maturity and thus to end customers even faster. Located in Südbahnstraße, the premises also serve as a networking platform with educational partners and students. Today, this new Infineon location in Innsbruck was officially opened in the presence of special guests.

"With the Infineon System Competence Center, we are providing another strong high-tech impetus for the Tyrol location and building on experience through cooperation. Since 2014, we have been working closely and successfully there with regional knowledge partners in research and teaching. With the now even stronger Infineon presence, we can establish a permanent innovation and networking incubator in the heart of Innsbruck," emphasizes Sabine Herlitschka, CEO Infineon Austria and adds: "Microelectronics is essential for the success of the digital and green transformation and thus for the major topics of decarbonization and digitalization. The system solutions developed here are the basis for innovative, sustainable products. At the same time, we can network even better with the technology talents of the future."

Florian Tursky, State Secretary for Digitization, attended the opening and was shown the first system demonstrators "Made in Innsbruck": "Without microchips, there would be no modern life as we know it today, from smartphones to intelligent household appliances to solar systems. But there is more to it than that: only with a strong microchip industry we can reduce dependencies on other countries and at the same time create jobs and prosperity. With the new competence center in Innsbruck, Infineon is already opening its sixth site in Austria, further strengthening the key technology of microelectronics from Austria."

Sixth site for Infineon in Austria
The System Competence Center in Innsbruck is Infineon's sixth location in Austria, in addition to Villach (headquarters), Klagenfurt, Graz, Vienna and Linz. On an area of about 400 m 2 in the P3 Tower in the Südbahnstraße in Innsbruck, the currently 10-member team has access to modern offices and laboratories with test and measurement equipment. The new location will combine local expertise even more strongly with the power of the Infineon brand and increase Innsbruck's visibility in microelectronics on a regional and international level. Infineon thus also offers young talents a networking platform for technical projects and scientific work.

System competence with hardware and software expertise
The System Competence Center follows Infineon's "From Product to System" approach and combines the latest hardware and software solutions to create initial reference systems. The demonstrators for high-performance and miniature microelectronic systems developed in Innsbruck can be used in e-mobility, life science, wearables or as service robots in industry, logistics, medical technology. They deliver more power, enable more functions, convert energy highly efficiently and thus minimize the CO 2 footprint in digital applications.

Richard Kunčič, Senior Vice President & General Manager PSS Power Systems Infineon Technologies Austria: "The market demand for intelligent and energy-efficient solutions is increasing. With the system competence and existing know-how in Innsbruck, we make it easier for our customers to bring complex products faster to market. Development times are shortened, while energy efficiency, functionality and user comfort increase. We thus create real benefits for groundbreaking and sustainable innovations."

Innovation hub for specialists of the future
Through the System Competence Center, young technology talents from the west of Austria find a "docking point" to deepen their digital skills and system know-how. They get to know the world of a globally leading high-tech company first-hand and can work on exciting technology projects. Infineon offers industrial internships, the “Infineon Schools” and provides support for master's and PhD theses. 58 percent of all employees at Infineon Austria currently hold an academic degree. Infineon can connect even more directly with the University of Innsbruck, and regional educational institutions. Another cooperation agreement was recently signed with the University of Innsbruck.

"With Infineon Austria, the University of Innsbruck has a strong partner from industry. There is already an exchange with several departments. We want to intensify this in the future and also expand it to new areas," says Veronika Sexl, Rector of the University of Innsbruck. "For our students, this cooperation offers the opportunity to think outside the box and gain experience in industry. This also benefits society, because innovation always takes place where people from different disciplines and contexts exchange ideas. So, everyone will benefit from this collaboration."
