Airbag control
Infineon's scalable and flexible solutions for mandatory life-saving airbag control units
With their ability to save lives and reduce injuries, automotive airbag systems are a mandatory safety feature in today’s vehicles. Despite their vitality, there is enormous pressure to keep the cost of airbags as low as possible – without compromising passenger safety. What you specifically need for airbag applications: Scalable, flexible airbag solutions, and a system that meets ASIL-D requirements (ISO 26262).
Reliable solutions for entry-level and high-end airbag systems
Infineon provides flexible semiconductor solutions for both entry-level and high-end airbag control unit systems meeting the ASIL-D requirements. Likewise, you can rely on our comprehensive system expertise for all airbag-related questions. And since Infineon supplies all components from one single source, you can rest assured that your automotive airbag applications will always function reliably.

- The components are optimized in terms of both system interoperability and the best price-performance ratio.
- These systems are mandatory in order to achieve the highest possible scores in the various “New Car Assessment Programs” (NCAP) around the world.
Recommended memory products for airbag system applications
Datalogging challenges in traditional event data recorders
- Temporary RAM buffer to hold an event data record. More data means more internal RAM.
- Event-based trigger to address endurance limit. Data is logged in non-volatile memory after the event using back-up power.
- Higher back-up capacitor for larger data
Infineon solution
- Fast write and instant non-volatile F-RAM memory enables continuous data logging
- Infinite endurance eliminates the need for a temporary RAM buffer
- Continuous logging means event records are non-volatile even before the event is triggered
F-RAM for automotive markets offers fast writes at full interface speed. F-RAM has no write delays and data is immediately non-volatile. Traditional non-volatile memories have delays of five or more milliseconds before data becomes non-volatile. In the event of a power failure, pending data is lost unless the system has extra capacitance or batteries to keep the system running until data is saved.
