SummerSchool 2022

Andreas Kopp and Manfred Graf – EXPO-Tour: Explore the semiconductor history (50 years Infineon), exclusive insight into Infineon’s innovation FAB

For 42 students from various universities from all over Europe, this year's SummerSchool has taken place from Monday, 12 until Friday, 16 September 2022. Since 2016, the Infineon SummerSchool has been held for interested students. This year's topic was "Cutting-edge chip manufacturing – Ready for mission future", which gave young talents insights into technical areas and future career opportunities. Internal and external experts shared their knowledge with the on-site attendees for one week in Villach. Additional to the lectures, a versatile program was offered to the students, including attractive activities like a climbing session or a special "Pub-Quiz-Evening".

First of all, they had a short briefing and introduction by the SummerSchool-Team, to get to know each other. Next the official opening started with a company overview of Infineon by COO Thomas Reisinger, followed by the EXPO-Tour by walking around the Infineon campus to get a good outline of the whole company.

Afterwards, we all met at McMullen's Pub, where we had organized a special "Infineon-Pub-Quiz". The winning team was gifted tickets for a clean room tour. This evening was a lot of fun and an excellent start into the SummerSchool week.

The FAB-Tour: Chips under stress test

On Tuesday the first students had personal job interviews with Infineon Managers, HR-Colleagues and colleagues from the IPCEI-Team. Followed by interesting insights from Infineon experts:

  • Daniela Pinczolits (Senior Director FE QM IFAT) – Think quality
  • Helmut Angerer (Director, Head of Failure Analysis Villach) – Failure analysis LAB-Tour
  • Benjamin Bastian (Head of Talent Marketing) – People are our success
  • Kurt Buchbauer (Senior Director, Reliability Product Testing) – FAB-Tour: Chips under stress test

The winner of the "PhD-Pitch-Session" Johannes Weichart (ETH Zürich) and CEO Sabine Herlitschka

Further lectures of internal and external experts:

  • Torsten Ullrich (Fraunhofer Austria Research GmbH) – Artificial intelligence - Possibilities and limits
  • Daniel Valtiner (Senior Manager Maintenance Implant), Simon Genot and Movsesyan Liana (AI Expert Infineon)– Workshop: Application of AI Technology in leading edge industry
  • Günter Schagerl (Vice President Rontend Technology) – Cutting edge technologies
  • Gerald Deboy (Distinguished Engineer Power Semiconductors and System Engineering, Head of innovation LAB) – Exclusive talk with a highly experience Tech-Expert

A highlight of this day was the "PhD-Pitch-Session": 9 PhD-Students had the chance to present and also to discuss their proposed topics for their doctoral thesis and to exchange ideas with Infineon experts: Gerald Deboy, Maria Mitronika, Anja Zernig, and Michael Glavanovics (from KAI), and Veneta Ivanova. The jury enjoyed the pitches and awarded prizes for the best presentation: Congratulation to Johannes Weichart (ETH Zürich) for his excellent speech about "Pursuing an artificial fingertip with human sensing capabilities with networks of tactile micro-sensors."

The day was concluded with a climbing session and dinner, which turned out to be the student's favorite evening.

The "Meet & Connect Session"

The day started with the following lectures:

  • Rafael Jonach (IT-Specialist, Infineon Austria) – DevOps within manufacturing execution system
  • Thomas Wuebben (Project Manager Technology and Innovation, GaN) – GaN – The future happens now!
  • Lisa-Marie Egarter (Automation project team) - High-Automation @Infineon Austria
  • Carinthian International Center (Isabel Brugger, Anastasiia Udovychenko)

In the afternoon the "Meet & Connect Session" offered students the possibility to ask managers and HR colleagues about various job opportunities at Infineon.

The "Final Closing-Event" of SummerSchool 2022

The last day was all about AI in the semiconductor industry. The students were not the only ones to benefit; 430 Infineon employees also followed the final Tech-Talk with Clemens Wasner (AI expert and CEO of enliteAI). Afterwards the students passed the final exam and enjoyed the last lunch in the Infineon canteen.

CEO Sabine Herlitschka closed an exciting week of SummerSchool 2022 with a personal message and best wishes for the future to all students.
