What is a zone controller?

A zone controller is a critical component in modern vehicles, responsible for managing and controlling various functions within a specific geographic zone of the vehicle. Within its zone, the ZCU acts as a hub, integrating and coordinating the functions of various local electronic control units (ECUs) and sensors to ensure seamless communication and operation and thus enables optimization of the vehicle’s hardware and software architecture.

 

A zone controller typically covers a range of functions, including:

  • Power distribution and management
  • Actuation and control of various vehicle systems
  • Sensor data processing and analysis
  • Communication with other ECUs and systems
  • Diagnostic and fault detection capabilities

The Flex Modular Zone controller platform is a game-changing solution that enables OEMs to rapidly implement and optimize their ZCU solutions. Built on common building blocks and featuring a modular MCU architecture, this platform provides a flexible and scalable solution for zone control unit implementation.

The platform enables efficient and fast implementation, allowing OEMs to quickly evaluate key component features and optimize performance.

The reference design leverages Infineon's industry-leading product families, including:

  • AURIX ™ TC4x microcontrollers for high-performance processing and safety-critical application
  • PROFET ™ power switches for efficient power distribution and management
  • MOTIX ™ motor control ICs for precise and reliable motor control
  • OPTIREG ™ voltage regulators for robust and efficient power supply

This solution combines Infineon’s performance-optimized chipsets with Flex's design and advanced manufacturing capabilities, resulting in an automotive-grade solution that can be quickly adapted to automakers’ specific requirements, speeding manufacturing ramp-up and time-to-market. With the Flex Modular Zone controller platform, customers can:

  • Conduct flexible test and optimization of their ZCU solutions
  • Improve product quality and reduce time-to-market
  • Evaluate different adaptations to their zone architectures and specific requirements
  • Enable enhancement of the overall performance and functionality of their vehicles
