Infineon expands its leading capacitive sensing technology CAPSENSE™ with a new, proprietary inductive sensing technology, as well as non-invasive and non-contact liquid sensing solution.

PSOC 4™ Multi-Sense unlocks new possibilities of sensing and HMI. From low-power, high-performance capacitive sensing systems to sleek metallic product designs with touch on metal buttons, to waterproof touch buttons, and innovative ways of sensing liquids, the only question that remains is: What will you sense?

PSOC™ 4000T and PSOC™ 4100T Plus are the first product families to feature the fifth-generation CAPSENSE™ and Multi-Sense . The supported sensing technologies can be combined in a single PSOC™ 4 MCU to optimize performance, enable new use cases or realize cost savings. In addition, Infineon’s fifth generation CAPSENSE™ with “Always On” technology enables sensing at 10X lower power consumption and offers a 10X higher signal-to-noise ratio than previous devices.

CAPSENSE™: Always-on sensing with 10x performance at 10x lower power

Infineon’s fifth generation CAPSENSE™ technology provides 10x higher SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) performance with 10x lower consumption than previous generations of CAPSENSE™.

Supporting both self and mutual-capacitive sensing, robust waterproofing, and SmartSense Auto-Tuning, CAPSENSE™ works under severe environments and speeds time-to-market with no manual tuning required.

CAPSENSE™ hover touch for capacitive sensor designs with air gaps

CAPSENSE™ hover touch benefits from the improved performance of the latest CAPSENSE™ generation and allows developers to increase the air gap between sensor and a touch surface (e.g. 2 cm air gap between sensor and touch surface).

CAPSENSE™ hover touch sensing supports new use cases where a direct touch of a button is not required. It can eliminate multiple components in certain applications such as springs and gaskets in cooktop touch panels. By bridging the airgap between sensor and touch surface with hover touch, customers achieve significant bill-of-material (BOM) savings, while realizing increased system performance, reduced design complexity, and faster time-to-market.

Infineon’s Flyback based inductive sensing is a new and proprietary technology which allows developer to create new HMI applications, such as touch-over-metal, force touch surfaces and proximity sensing.  It is less sensitive to noise and more robust than current state of the art approaches that suffer from external noise as well as manufacturability concerns.

Inductive sensing on PSOC™ 4 technology is highly complementary to capacitive sensing and enables modern, metal-based and waterproof designs with sleek form factors such as metal touch buttons on refrigerators or robust HMI for underwater devices such as cameras and wearables.

Design your inductive sensor buttons with Infineon’s Sensor Designer in ModusToolbox™ (CAPSENSE™ and Multi-Sense Pack)

  • Create optimal sensor system design based on your system requirements
  • Choose from a variety of sensor, overlay and PCB parameters to get the best performance
  • Export .dxf file for easy and seamless integration into your PCB and product

PSOC™ 4 offers a non-invasive and non-contact liquid sensing capability that enables cost-effective and accurate sensing than mechanical sensors and typical capacitive solutions. The new liquid sensing solution is based on both Infineon’s proprietary liquid sensing technology and AI/ML based data processing algorithm, hence  the solution is resistant to environmental factors such as temperature and humidity and can detect liquid levels with up to 0.1mm step size in various shapes of containers.

The solution reliably works with varying air gaps between sensor and container. It offers a set of features such as foam and residue rejection. Liquid sensing on PSOC™ 4 brings more intelligence to applications managing liquids such as robot vacuum cleaner, soap dispensing in washing machine, coffee machines, humidifiers, etc.
