Exterior Lighting, especially LED Front Lighting, is not only one of the key differentiating factors for car-makers as a brand recognition but as well an important part of safety (road illumination by automatically adjusting the headlamp cone of light depending on speed, steering angle and vehicle tilt angle), reliability (extended lifetime), energy efficiency (low power consumption) and the so-called “User Experience: UX” (emotional identification).
LED Front Lighting Modules today serve various applications like side markers, daytime running lights, turn indicators and adaptive headlights.
As more and more dynamic and animation functions have come to the Front Lighting System, the complexity for supply, communication, sense, control, and actuation has been continuously increasing. To keep this complexity manageable in terms of space on the PCB but also in terms of power dissipated, the integration of functions became a key factor for the design.
Infineon offers dedicated solutions for supply and communication as well as for LED control with a benefit from low power consumption and low quiescent current:
Infineon LITIX™ Auto LED drivers provide top LED advantages and fully protect your automotive lighting application. Take advantage of diagnostic functions of open and short LEDs with derivatives from our LITIX™ Auto LED Driver family – mandatory features for driving LED lighting in harsh automotive conditions. A further cost-efficient way to drive LEDs with diagnosis and protection can be realized with the SPIDER+ LED devices.
Regarding the design, LED Front Light Module systems require:
- A supply and communication interface which can be built discrete (voltage regulator + LIN transceiver) semi-integrated (LIN-LDO) or integrated (SBC)
- A set of scalable LED Driver ICs with sense, diagnose and protection functions
An automotive front light high beam / low beam combination can be efficiently realized by using the flexible multi-topology DC/DC controller TLD5099EP of the LITIX™ Power family in current-controlled buck-boost SEPIC configuration.
One single DC-DC channel is used to drive the high beam and low beam. The high beam can be activated in conjunction with the low beam or the low beam can be activated standalone. This represents a cost-saving approach especially suitable for entry-level LED headlamps. A PWM dimming feature enables furthermore control of brightness and enables derating in extreme operating conditions. State of the art diagnosis is provided as well as transient robustness. Compliant EMC performance is verified according to the CISPR25 standard. Thermal performance information is given and discussed.
