About

There are mainly two types of desktop power supplies, very-high-power for gaming (also to support mining for cryptocurrency), and the other for enterprise PCs. Both types of PCs use the x86 CPU, which requires a much higher peak current and higher power than previous solutions.

Overall, a desktop PC switched mode power supply should deliver efficient power conversion, a compact design, stable power output, protective features, and effective cooling, contributing to the reliable and efficient operation of desktop PCs of any type. Infineon’s wide portfolio of semiconductors does all of this and more. We offer a complete system solution to meet desktop power supply unit (PSU) requirements and trends such as higher power and efficiency. In addition to our impressive silicon products, we also offer wide bandgap options that bring many additional benefits and options into the picture.

Infineon's wide semiconductor portfolio meets and, in some cases, exceeds all of your needs and requirements. For example, our CoolMOS™ high-voltage MOSFETs and OptiMOS™ mid- and low-voltage MOSFETs, our EiceDRIVER™ gate drivers, and our CoolSET™ auxiliary SMPS controllers are all the best fit for market trends in desktop PC SMPS designs.

Additionally, we empower decarbonization with our CoolGaN™ and CoolSiC™ wide bandgap (WBG) technologies, which offer fundamental advantages over silicon devices and are designed to enable even higher efficiency and density with robust, high-quality, and reliable products. They exhibit no or very low reverse recovery charge, allowing the use of WBG devices in hard-switched topologies such as the totem-pole PFC.

Specifically, our CoolSiC™ technology exhibits the lowest increase in RDS(on) overtemperature, making it the prime choice for high-current applications in hard-switching topologies. On the other hand, our CoolGaN™ technology exhibits the lowest Qg and QOSS charges, making it the preferred choice for soft-switching high frequency topologies like LLC.

The two main trends driving desktop PC SMPS innovation are higher power and higher efficiency. There are multiple reasons for this, but the most common is the requirement of gaming/mining desktop PCs to reach higher output power ratings while also remaining efficient. Other trends include the desire for smaller and smaller power supplies while not losing any performance. This trend is present in both gaming/mining PCs as well as enterprise solutions. Yet another trend is the desire for modular designs and more effective cooling. These two trends go hand in hand, since the modular design allows for better cable management and better airflow.

Infineon's portfolio of MOSFETs, ICs, gate driver ICs, and microcontrollers meet these trends and more, and enables you to build truly powerful and energy efficient desktop PC designs.
