TO-247 4pin package

An innovative package using Kelvin source concept

anchor

Overview

With new generations of power switches becoming ever faster, the effect of the package and PCB parasitic limit increasingly the overall system performance. An effective measure to overcome this problem is to provide an additional connection to the source (Kelvin connection) that is used as a reference potential for the gate driving voltage, thereby eliminating the effect of voltage drops over the source inductance.

Key Features

  • Low impedance Kelvin source pin
  • Increased creepage distance
  • Gate signal optimization
  • Creepage up to 5000 m altitude
  • Faster switching & high-efficiency
  • Simplified wave soldering
  • Reduced board yield loss
  • Easier to design-in

About

The performance gain of 0.6 % full load efficiency can be achieved if the same die is used in a 4-pin versus a 3-pin package. Lower full load losses with a 4-pin part allow for the next ‘smaller’ MOSFET (60 mΩ instead of 45 mΩ), enabling a BOM (Bill of Material) cost reduction with better low-load efficiency.

The parasitic source inductance counteracts the driver voltage. Separate pin “source-sense” (Kelvin source) delivers an undisturbed signal to the gate of the MOSFET.

In addition to 3x lower switching losses, leading to higher efficiency, the closer control over the gate voltage results in lower oscillations and reduced EMI in the MHz range.

With 600 V CoolMOS™ P7 Infineon introduces an improved version of the standard TO-247 4-pin package.

The TO-247 4-pin with asymmetric leads comes along with increased creepage distance between the critical leads and enables smoother wave soldering and reduced board yield loss.
