About

Battery management systems (BMS) are vital aspects of any system in the industrial or consumer markets. Without the BMS, the battery could be vulnerable to damage or even become hazardous to the user. Additionally, a BMS can be used to improve the efficiency of the battery, helping to increase battery life and lifetime, and leading to a better end user experience in consumer applications such as mobile devices, cordless power tools, and light electric vehicles. On the other hand, BMS for industrial applications such as robots, energy storage systems (ESS), battery backup units (BBU), and professional tools does the same, but on a much larger scale.

Infineon offers many semiconductor solutions for BMS in both industrial and consumer applications. These solutions are broken down into three diverse topology-based categories:

  • Non-stackable BMS: These topologies are commonly used in power tools, drones, eBikes, and electric 2-wheelers, and are not stacked in series.
  • Stackable BMS: In these topologies, stackable battery packs, which are an architecture widely used in applications like ESS, EVs, and LEVs feature multiple cell monitoring and balancing ICs that are stacked in series, communicating the vital battery cell data through a transceiver to the main BMS controller. Good isolation and reliable protection are required for these HV packs.
  • Non-stackable BMS and DC-DC converters: These topologies are commonly used in battery back-up systems in applications like telecom and datacenters, where a BMS circuit is coupled with a DC-DC converter to ensure a regulated output voltage. The DC-DC stage is bidirectional and usually a buck-boost topology, as either single or multiphase.

Battery protection units are an essential part of any battery management system. Due to Infineon's longstanding expertise in power MOSFETs, we call special attention to our semiconductor solutions for BPUs. Choosing Infineon as your partner in BPU delivers many exciting benefits, such as higher performance with lower RDS(on, wider safe operating area (SOA), and short-circuit protection with higher peak current rates, to name just a few.
