iMOTION™ integrated motor control (IMC)

For high flexibility and fast time-to-market

anchor

Overview

The iMOTION™ IMC devices are a family of motor control ICs for the highly efficient control of a variable speed drive (PMSM/BLDC). With their ready-to-use motor control algorithm, they allow the fastest time-to-market and can control either a discrete inverter implementation or an intelligent power module (IPM).

Key Features

  • Single core system
  • Single or three leg shunts
  • Hall sensor or sensorless
  • Field-proven Motion Control Engine

About

A distinction is made between the three IMC series. The smallest derivative, the IMC099 is a standalone implementation of the Motion Control Engine (MCE) for single-motor applications like fans and pumps. The IMC100 devices offer an integrated scripting engine like a small virtual machine. IMC300 is a series of motor control ICs combining the feature set of the IMC100 series with an additional microcontroller for maximum application flexibility.

The family takes advantage of the latest evolution of our field-proven MCE. This generation of the MCE contains multiple improvements to the base algorithms and implements several features.

All iMOTION™ IMC devices support the functional safety requirements according to the IEC/UL 60730 (‘Class B’).

iMOTION™ IMC100 motor controller with Motion Control Engine in TSSOP-38 package. The IMC099T-T038 is a low-cost package controller for variable-speed drives. It performs sensorless field oriented control (FOC) for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM).

The iMOTION™ IMC099 family incorporates important key features, e.g., the highly integrated solution for inverterized drives where all digital and analog components are integrated and no external OPAMP or comparators are required with a 3.3 V or 5 V supply. It is the next generation of Motion Control Engine (MCE) with field-proven computation engine for high-efficiency sinusoidal motor control with flexible host interface/control options and integrated protection features featuring a multiple motor support with flexible parameter handling.

The key benefits are, among other things, the fastest time to market where no programming is required, and easy motor parametrization and tuning is possible. In addition, the IMC099 has full protection for the power stage and motor and full flexibility on the gate driver and power stage, and finally the lowest BOM cost where no external OPAMP or comparators are required.

Being optimized for cost-sensitive applications like major and small home appliances, the IMC100 family is based on a single MCE processing core. Yet, they offer application flexibility to the user with the integration of a small virtual machine. Scripts can be generated, tested, and downloaded with the standard iMOTION™ tools. As standalone controllers, they can be combined with the best fit from Infineon's extensive portfolio of IPMs or discrete gate drivers and power stages for both high- and low-voltage applications.

The iMOTION™ IMC100 family incorporates important key features, e.g., the next-generation MCE with sensorless Field Oriented Control (FOC) and flexible host interface options, integrated protection features, a scripting engine for application flexibility, and the option for boost or totem pole PFC.

The key benefits are, among other things, the fastest time-to-market where no programming is required, and easy motor parametrization and tuning are possible. In addition, the IMC100 has the lowest BOM cost with integrated ADC and comparators, a sensorless FOC algorithm, an internal oscillator, and no need for external OpAmp for current sensing.

In the IMC300 dual-core implementation, the MCE runs fully independently from the microcontroller providing the optimal combination of easy-to-use and reliable motor control. The MCE in the IMC300 series can control the motor running either sensorless or with sensor support and is available with ready-to-use algorithms for boost and totem pole PFC implementations. IMC300 device variants are available for standalone motor control as well as motor control plus PFC and come in an LQFP-48 or LQFP-64 package.

The iMOTION™ IMC099 family incorporates important key features, e.g., completely self-sustaining MCE with an identical feature set as the IMC100 series and integrated protection features, MCU with industry-standard ARM® Cortex®-M0 core, flexible peripherals, and communication interfaces, and high level of pin-compatibility to IMC100 series.

The key benefits are, among other things, the fastest time-to-market where no programming is required, and easy motor parametrization and tuning is possible. In addition, the IMC300 is a completely independent microcontroller for additional functionality and customized communication easy scaling between IMC100 and IMC300.
