Whatever you touch in a car, there is an electric motor close by. Brushed DC motors are easy to control and often serve as actuators with an overall short operating time. Torque control down to zero speed is easy to achieve. Typical applications are:

  • Body applications such as power seat modules, power closure systems, window lift, sunroof, mirror modules and wipers.

Brushless DC (BLDC) motors have less wear but need a complex control algorithm and, therefore, higher computing power than a DC motor drive. BLDC motors are most suitable for applications demanding long-term continuous duty. Typical applications are

  • Powertrain and thermal management such as HVAC compressor, auxiliary pumps, fuel pumps and engine cooling fans.
  • Safety relevant applications such as electric power steering, brake booster, and MHEV starter generator.
  • Body applications such as seat cooling and sunroof or front wiper

Infineon offers different BLDC motor driver ICs to meet customer-specific preferences:

  • MOTIX™ gate driver ICs for BLDC motor control for voltage domains ranging from 12 V to 48 V (up to ASIL D).
  • MOTIX™ motor system ICs (SBC) integrating gate driver, power supply and communication (LIN or CAN FD transceivers). 
  • With MOTIX™ MCU (SoC) Infineon offers in addition 32-bit motor control system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for BLDC motors up to 1 kW.

PSOC™ Control is designed for motor control applications such as home appliances, industrial drives, robots, LEVs, and HVAC systems. These MCUs feature advanced programmable analog subsystems like a 12-bit, 12-Msps ADC and a CORDIC Accelerator.

iMOTION™ products are offered in several integration levels including hardware as well as software. The hardware integration comprises stand-alone motor controllers, motor controllers with integrated gate drivers (SmartDriver) and fully integrated inverters-in-a-package (SmartIPM).
