Auxiliary pumps and fans
Integrated automotive motor control solutions for electric pumps and fans
Whether electric or fuel powered, luxury or economy class, vehicles today are equipped with increasingly more systems that rely on a wide range of motor control applications. This commonly includes powertrain applications like auxiliary pumps and fans.
Recent growth in vehicle electrification has resulted in greater dependency on microelectronic components. One example is motor control for small motors that deliver up to 1 kW, in which more and more integrated system-on-chip solutions are used for electric pumps, such as a fuel pump, oil pump and water pump, and fans like a HVAC blower and engine cooling fan.
Due to their location near the engine, motor control solutions for automotive pumps and fans must be highly robust and able to withstand high temperatures. At the same time, car manufacturers face the challenge of accommodating a growing number of auxiliary pumps, such as for battery cooling, in a limited space.
Integrated solutions enable optimization
Turning to general market trends, there is rising demand for upgraded pumps and fans that come at a higher price. Upgrading is advantageous, but also increases overall system costs at a time marked by high competition. Cost-optimized integrated solutions for motor control applications are an ideal way to counteract higher component cost.
Returning to the size factor, integrated solutions also greatly reduce the PCB size for small auxiliary pumps. Infineon is especially strong in this arena. For instance, while our competitors require you to use a separate charge pump for stop-start operation, it’s integrated in ours. Actually, Infineon’s integrated motor control solutions, known as Embedded Power ICs, do not require any other external components besides the power stage or MOSFETs. This makes them the smallest on the market and ideal for extremely small and compact designs in which space comes at a premium. For motor control projects that require rotary sensors, such as TMR, GMR and AMR, the Infineon TLE9879-2QXA40 features a two differential 14-bit Delta-Sigma ADC for higher system optimization. Infineon’s Embedded Power ICs are optimized for pump and fan applications. And to reduce your design-in effort, we offer software and hardware compatible devices for both DC and BLDC applications, providing you a solution that optimized from start to finish.
Qualified up to 175°C
The advantages of opting for Infineon are clear: you get the most technologically advanced integrated motor control solutions, specially engineered for pump and fan applications. All applications that deliver up to 1 kW can benefit from our high-quality, reliable and robust products that are qualified for up to 175°C. For your designs this translates into freedom to place our products directly on the engine.
Without exception, system reliability is and will always be a priority. In motor control applications equipped with sensors, our chip measures in different areas, enabling a system reliability that is unachievable with a discrete solution. Of course, if you want the flexibility discrete solutions offer, you will find the exact components you are looking for in our one-stop-shop of microcontrollers, transceivers, SBCs and MOSFET drivers. For instances in which you need to build multiple applications, our product families offer you the benefits of scalability, such as one-off effort for software. This enables you to design high-end solutions for the luxury segment and low-end designs for budget cars, in a single go.
