Electromobility: Hybrid Electric and Electric Cars
What does Infineon have to do with electromobility?
In an electric vehicle, the combustion engine is replaced by an electric motor while in a Hybrid Electrical Vehicle (HEV), the combustion engine is supplemented with an electric motor. Semiconductors are indispensable for all types of electrified powertrains.
Due to the limited storage capacity of the battery in an electric car, the energy consumption of electric vehicles has to be as efficient as possible. Semiconductors play a decisive role in this process because they are, so to speak, the relay points in any electrical network – not only in a nationwide power grid, but also in every single vehicle or electrical device.
In cars themselves, semiconductors make an important contribution by ensuring that the batteries are as cost-efficient, light-weight and small as possible – while simultaneously delivering long travel range. But as all batteries eventually become empty they have to be quickly and efficiently rechargeable. That is where semiconductors come into the picture.
We are proud to be able to deliver market-leading hybrid electric and electric vehicle solutions already today. By offering innovative and highly efficient products of outstanding quality, we are driving innovative electrified powertrain solutions geared towards more sustainable mobility choices.
