Infineon Technologies Delivers New Integrated Power Semiconductor Family Enabling More Efficient and Cost-Effective Power Supplies
Munich, Nuremberg, Germany May 14, 2002 On occasion of the PCIM 2002 show, Infineon Technologies, a leading manufacturer of power semiconductors, has announced further members of its CoolSET F2 family. The new products in the TO220 package are designed for output power ratings up to 240W, enabling switched-mode power supply (SMPS) manufacturers to rapidly develop efficient, low-cost and high-quality power supplies conforming to the new EU minimum heat generation guidelines with improved efficiency in normal and standby operation. The CoolSET F2 family boasts the lowest drain-source on-state resistance in the industry, around 40 percent less than that of current products on the market. Typical applications include primarily adapter power supplies for notebooks, for example, as well as integrated power supply solutions featuring high power density for flat-panel LCD monitors, set-top boxes or compact, general-purpose auxiliary power supply units.
CoolSET F2 products combine a power MOSFET implemented in the CoolMOS (Metal Oxide Semiconductor) technology, developed by Infineon, with a fixed-frequency PWM (Pulse Width Modulation) control IC.
The very low switching and conduction losses of the CoolSET devices lead to a marked reduction in heat generation. The new 240W products in the insulated TO220 package provide optimum heat dissipation, with thermal resistance (Rth = 2.5 K/W) improved by more than 50 percent compared with Fullpack versions. Depending on the ambient temperature and the desired power output, the heatsinks have been reduced to an absolute minimum. Infineons CoolSET 65W products reduce the need for conventional heatsinks.
Both TO220 versions, the CoolSET ICE2A765P and the ICE2B765P, integrate a CoolMOS with a drain-source on-state resistance (RDSon) of only 0.5 ohm and a drain-source breakdown voltage (VDS) of 650V. Power ICs in the TO220 package currently available from other manufacturers exhibit on-state resistances of 0.8 ohm and above. If necessary, Infineon can integrate a CoolMOS with an RDSon of max. 0.35 ohm and VDS of 650V in a CoolSET in the TO220 package.
The new 240W CoolSET F2 versions in the TO220 multichip package feature an array of built-in monitoring, protection and energy-saving functions. They minimize the amount of external wiring needed and allow a more compact SMPS design at a lower overall cost. Highlights include the current mode control function with integrated overshoot minimization, MOSFET temperature sensing by means of an internal sensor for instantaneous shutdown in the event of reaching a critical junction temperature, as well as an under voltage lockout (UVL) function to prevent destruction of the CoolMOS as a result of incorrect drive voltage levels.
A user-defined softstart function increases the life of vital SMPS components; an extended pulse duty factor of the CoolMOS drive signal permits operation in either discontinuous or continuous current mode. The CoolSETs leading-edge blanking function ensures safe turn-on behavior, both in standard situations and at auto restart.
Overcurrent, overvoltage and open-loop protection functions are also integrated. Under no-load conditions, i.e. at 0W output power, the standby power is stepped back to less than 500mW (in 80W applications). This energy-saving concept has been implemented without an additional connection pin, and with no external wiring.
The CoolSET F2 evaluation package includes samples, application notes, data sheet, demo board and demo board description, Excel-based PC calculation software, and PSpice models.
The new TO220 types in the CoolSET F2 family, the ICE2A765P and ICE2B765P, are available in volume quantities. In quantities of 10,000, the unit price is Euro 1.26 both for the ICE2A765P device (130W maximum output power at 85V...265V input voltage) and for the 67kHz CoolSET variant, the ICE2B765P.
The high-performance types in the TO220 package to max. 240W with six pins complement the previously available CoolSET F2 versions for output power ratings up to max. 65W in the eight-pin plastic dual inline package.
Infineon Technologies will present the new power semiconductors at PCIM 2002 show (14.-16. May 2002, Nuremberg, Germany) in Hall 12, booth 103.
