Infineon Technologies Announces First 64-bit Communications Processor for Network Edge Access Devices: EasyPort Offers Common Platform for High-Performance Broadband Data and Voice/Data Systems

Atlanta, June 3, 2002 – Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading provider of integrated circuits (ICs) for advanced communication systems, today introduced the EasyPort™ broadband communications processor family. Based on a powerful 64-bit CPU core subsystem and featuring extensive packet and ATM cell processing functionality, EasyPort provides the compute power and flexibility for data and voice/data Integrated Access Device (IAD) systems, small and medium enterprise gateways, access routers and Voice over IP (VoIP) routers. Infineon will demonstrate the EasyPort at Supercomm 2002, June 4 - 6 in Atlanta, Ga., booth #23726.

Infineon’s EasyPort ICs are the industry’s first network terminal controllers based on the MIPS64™ 5Kc™ high-end processor core. The controllers are designed to provide system manufacturers with a powerful platform for implementation of broadband link systems, from access router applications up to multi-function ATM and IP-based products.

Drawing on its experience and broad product lines for access connectivity, Infineon is the only network processor provider to offer a complete set of peripherals and broadband transceiver chipsets for system implementation. These range from T1/E1 to very high-speed DSL bandwidths, enabling manufacturers to create access product lines that scale from the small office/home office (SOHO) to mid-size enterprise grade solutions for data, video and voice services.

EasyPort Platform Solution

The EasyPort communications processor family supports multiple uplinks, allowing access through a wide range of broadband technologies, including traditional T1/E1 framers, standardized DSL transceivers (ADSL, SHDSL and VDSL) and Infineon’s innovative high-speed 10BaseS™ Ethernet over VDSL technology. When used in combination with VINETIC™, Infineon‘s Voice-over-Packet/Voice-over-Cell solution, the platform supports complete and highly scalable voice systems with up to 32 voice channels.

The first four EasyPort ICs are the EasyPort-100/-200 data-only processors and the EasyPort-V100/-V200 voice data processors. Common architecture features of all versions include the embedded processor subsystem, ATM Cell processing with extensive QoS features, and a packet processing subsystem that includes an Ethernet MAC and controllers for HDLC, USB, dedicated DMA, and AAL5. Features of the integrated voice/data platforms include an AAL2 controller, synchronous serial interface for control of companion SLIC devices, and up to 32 HDLC accelerators. The 200 MHz versions add a second pin-programmable Ethernet/MII port.

The EasyPort family is one of the first available communication processors based on the MIPS64 5Kc processor core. With its integrated Memory Management Unit (MMU), EasyPort supports advanced JAVA-based applications and critical network services such as firewalls and VPNs. The architecture also is ready for the full 128-bit IP addressing defined in the IPv6 protocol. On-board co-processors offload packet and voice handling operations, to allow the central CPU to remain dedicated to application execution.

Software Support

Infineon provides CAMPOS, an embedded Linux operating system for the EasyPort family, as well as a firmware suite designed to offload data link and voice processing functions from the main CPU. Dedicated on-chip application processors support Infineon’s xDSL chipsets, VINETIC voice processors, SLICs and T1/E1 framers to provide Broadband Loop Emulation Services (BLES). Future applications offering support for additional signalling protocols will become available over time. Users of EasyPort will be able to run the Open Sources Linux software using a comprehensive API to access I/O features. This high degree of integration enables rapid time-to-market for sophisticated applications.

Pricing and Availability

The first four members of the EasyPort family, available in engineering samples this quarter, are scheduled for volume delivery in the fourth quarter 2002. Complete firmware, evaluation support and reference designs are available concurrently. All EasyPort family members are delivered in a 416-pin-PBGA package. Pricing ranges from $20 - $34 in quantities of 10,000.
