Battery Management ICs
Infineon’s battery management ICs offer an optimize solution for cell monitoring and balancing
Infineon’s new family of dedicated battery management ICs offer the perfect solution for a wide variety of applications. Battery management ICs, also known as battery balancing ICs or battery monitoring ICs, are essential for the overall health of many automotive systems. These include automotive (MHEV, HEV, PHEV, and BEV), industrial (i.e. energy storage systems), and consumer products (i.e. ebike). Infineon integrated circuits and designs help you to layout your battery management system.
Our battery management ICs can be used in safety relevant applications. For example, our automotive BMS solutions meet safety requirements up to ASIL-D and are ISO26262 compliant. These products are designed to work together with the AURIX™ family of microcontrollers and functional safety capable PMIC. This provides a full solution for voltage and temperature sensing, as well as balancing and communication across a variety of battery solutions.
Battery monitoring systems for lithium-ion cells need to monitor the voltage and temperature of battery cells, performing critical functions such as cell balancing. Accurate cell voltage measurement will also ensure that the battery works within safe operating conditions in order to comply with functional safety requirements.
Battery management system refers to the electronics that deliver information to the host system about status of the battery like state of charge and state of health information and perform the cell management.
Certain battery cell chemistries may become unstable in case of over voltage, charging after under voltage or overcurrent. Therefore, the Battery Management System is there to ensure that the cells in the system are always operated inside the SOA of the given chemistry. Infineon products contribute by providing voltage of each cell and temperature measurement through external resistor (NTC), the cell balancing as well as communicating the measurement results and diagnostic information to the main microcontroller.
Infineon´s Battery Management System devices family is designed and engineered for systems to support 800V and above. Infineon devices can be operated either directly from microcontroller by using UART or through iso UART interface by using the BMS transceiver IC which enables a galvanically isolated communication interface by inductive or capacitive coupling.
Yes, Infineon´s Battery Management System products have been designed fulfilling the highest quality standards and finally qualified according AEC Q100 qualification standard.
