PROFET™ Automotive Smart High-Side Switch BTT6020-1EKA:
Protection Features - Over-Current & Over-Temperature Shutdown

The BTT6020-1EKA is an Automotive qualified single channel Smart High-Side Power Switch
with 20 mΩ on state resistance. It is equiped with diverse protection features. Infineon’s PROFET™
protected high-side switches drive resistive, capacitive as well as inductive loads .

This circuit demonstrates the over-current limitation and over-temperature with shutdown features
of the BTT6020-1EKA. Many other PROFET™ devices provide similar protection features.

The over-current situation is triggered by the switch SW_OC. The trigger on and off timing can be set
in the text box on the left. The current is limited to the "load current limitation" (see datasheet Table 6).
The junction temperature increases dramatically due to over-current and once the thermal shutdown
temperature is achieved, the device shuts down automatically.

The sensing feature at pin IS is enable if there is a logic high at DEN pin. As long as no "hard" failure
mode occurs (short circuit to GND / current limitation / over-temperature / excessive dynamic
temperature increase / open load at OFF), the IS pin provides the current SENSE with a ratio k_ILIS.
It is related to the sense resistance Rsense at pin IS. (See datasheet chapter 7)

The device has a thermal latch behavior. When the overtemperature or the exceed dynamic temperature
condition has disappeared, it is reactivated only when the IN is toggled LOW to HIGH. In this circuit with
original settings the fault latch is cleared at 32 ms when the control signal at IN is toggled.
