Within TELEV, a collaborative project with the aerospace industry, Infineon Technologies AG took lead of the task 'Microcontrollers for functionally safe control architectures in aerospace applications'. The task focused on the transfer of automotive solutions to aerospace applications, serving as a reference implementation. Key areas included the use of multi-core processors for fail-operational applications in aerospace. Additionally, the project emphasized the efficient distribution of processing performance, leveraging a Solid State Power Controller (SSPC) provided by one of the project partners.

The demonstration addresses the concept of performance distribution using SSPC in conjunction with multi-core processors. To illustrate this, a steer-by-wire system from the automotive sector is showcased to demonstrate fail-operational in multi-core application. Comparable to the architecture in SSPC, the entire system has redundant architecture.

Safety Kit Demonstrator

An important aspect of the project was achieving fault tolerance, a critical feature in safety-critical systems. This aspect is effectively highlighted through a safety kit demonstrator, enabling visitors to experience it in a visually engaging manner.

Another significant result during this project was the creation of a whitepaper, to show the capability of AURIX™ TC3xx microcontroller in aerospace applications.

The demonstrators originate from the collaboration in the TELEV project.

The overarching goal of TELEV was to develop and enable electrical power supply and propulsion technologies for use in hybrid-electric propulsion systems for manned aircraft. In particular, aircraft are understood to be fixed-wing aircraft, but also new concepts such as eVTOLs (Electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing Vehicles).

Infineon's specific objective was to research and demonstrate a multi-core, system-on-chip computer architecture based on a safety microcontroller from the AURIX™ family. 

TELEV was funded by the Federal Republic of Germany, sponsor: Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy (LuFo VI-1, FKZ 20M1917B, on the basis of a resolution of the “German Bundestag”.

The existing demonstrator features a steering wheel that controls an EPS (Electric Power Steering) motor, allowing a steering axis to be moved without a mechanical connection. The focus of the demonstrator itself is on its compact design, which enables the realization of a control unit for fail-operational applications. Through the presentation, a detailed overview of the hardware and software architecture is provided, which describes a complete fail-operational architecture. 

An additional aspect of the fault tolerance can be made more tangible with the Safety Kit. Here, it is possible to inject faults via pressing a button. The fault is then visualized in real-time on a monitor. Furthermore, it is possible to track the alarm response of safety mechanisms (SMs).

This paper titled “How Infineon ISO 26262 AURIX™ TC3x microcontroller supports safety critical certification within aerospace industry”, demonstrates how COTS analysis (Commercial Off The Shelf) for a TC38x device can be used for an aviation application and it also shows the ability of hardware-, software-safety mechanisms (SMs) to reduce the effort for FPGA development. It provides a guidance for the usage of automotive-certified products in aviation
