Transfer wireless energy simply, efficiently and safely
The Wireless Power Consortium’s (WPC) Qi standard supports single-coil and multi-coil inductive topologies and uses frequencies of 110-205 kHz. In terms of sheer volume, it is the dominant standard on the market today. Inductive technology currently relies on in-band communication and enables wireless power to be transferred simply, efficiently and safely. For higher power designs out-of-band communication using Bluetooth is an option to improve data transfer capacity while providing a reliable communication interface between Transmitter and Receiver. The inductive WPC Qi standard has become extremely popular, fueled by the success of wireless smartphone charging. Looking ahead, wireless power transfer will also become a “must-have” feature in a wide range of other applications, including power tools, service robots and notebooks as well as medical and smart home devices.
Foreign object detection in inductive wireless charging
Foreign object detection (FOD) is a key challenge for manufacturers in the design of inductive wireless power systems. FOD is a safety mechanism in wireless power systems that automatically interrupts power delivery when interference from a foreign object is detected. This could be coins, paper clips and other metal objects – all of which can interfere with power delivery, significantly impacting efficiency and posing a major safety hazard for devices and end users. FOD is a vital design factor, especially in higher power systems as foreign objects heat up even more quickly in these environments. Infineon’s premium semiconductor components enable highly efficient foreign object detection due to the low capacitance figure of merit (FOMCoss) of our OptiMOS™ product family and a high-accuracy ADC in the XMC™ microcontroller family to determine power loss or quality factor deviation for safe and seamless wireless power operation.
Authentication for Qi wireless charging
The proliferation of low-quality chargers is starting to become a real issue in the global wireless charging market. These sub-standard chargers communicate according to the WPC Qi protocol but have not passed certification in a WPC lab. Thus, correct operation is not guaranteed which can lead to unintentional behavior of the transmitter and even damage receiving devices. The only way to fight this phenomenon is to enforce the standard, thus ensuring a uniform level of safety, security and conformity. This can be achieved through a hardware authentication IC in a WPC Qi-certified transmitter establishing trust between the wireless charger and a power receiving device. In the next iteration of the WPC Qi standard, this feature is expected to be introduced.
At Infineon, we are committed to keeping you, your data and your devices secure. And this is exactly what the latest addition to our OPTIGA™ Trust family does. The OPTIGA™ Trust Charge is an integrated turnkey solution for authentication according to the next generation WPC Qi standard and reflects our commitment to supporting a single standard for the entire market.
