What is FIDO?

The FIDO (Fast IDentity Online) Alliance is a non-profit organization nominally formed in July 2012 with Infineon, PayPal, Lenovo, Nok Nok Labs, Validity Sensors, and Agnitio as the founding companies. In 2018 it already has over 220 members, including Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Lenovo, Alibaba, Bank of America, Verizon, Wells Fargo, Visa and Master Card to  name only some.
Key Targets:

  • Reduced complexity of password-based log-on to services
  • Increased security and strengthened protection against unauthorized access at optimized ease of use
  • Increased trust in security of sensitive data and private accounts

FIDO standards address the lack of interoperability among strong authentication technologies, and remedy the problems users face with creating and remembering multiple usernames and passwords. WIth FIDO standards a single token authenticates the user and reduces or removes the reliance on passwords across multiple participating websites. FIDO provides a multi-factor authentication solution that improves security and usability versus passwords alone.
