The EZ-PD™ CCG3 USB Type-C Charge-Through Dongle solution enables connectivity between a USB Type-C Notebook and HDMI Display, legacy USB device and Gigabit Ethernet while also connecting a USB Type-C charging cable. The Charge-Through Dongle solution allows simultaneous HDMI display, Superspeed data transfers, Ethernet connection and charging USB Type-C Notebook. Charge-Through Dongle is also widely known as Multiport Adapter.
The EZ-PD™ CCG3 fully supports the latest Power Delivery 3.0 specification especially the fast role swap feature. Fast Role Swap enables externally powered dongle to rapidly switch to bus power when their external power supply is removed. For more details, refer to Section 6.3.17 (FR_Swap Message) in the USB-PD 3.0 specification. This solution is designed to be fully interoperable with revision 3.0 of the USB Power Delivery specification as well as its previous revision (USB Power Delivery 2.0). The CCG3 Charge-Through reference design is supported by Infineon's EZ-PD Software Development Kit version 3.0 (EZ-PD™ SDK).
Power Budget:
In self-power mode (USB Type-C Power Adapter is connected to the Type-C charging port), the CCG3 USB Type-C Charge-Through Dongle solution consumes 9 watts of power (Type-A port and chipset in the system). This solution deducts 9 watts power from the USB Type-C Power Adapter power before advertising on the upstream Type-C plug. For example: If the USB Type-C Power Adapter connected to the Type-C charging port is capable of providing 60W (20V@3A) of power, the solution will deduct 9 watts and advertise 51W (variable PDO ranging 17.8V-21V@2.55A) on the Type-C plug connected to the Notebook.
In bus-power mode (USB Type-C Power Adapter is not connected to the Type-C charging port and solution is powered from the attached host on the Type-C plug), the CCG3 USB Type-C Charge-Through Dongle solution consumes 7.5 watts of power which is provided by a 5V@1.5A USB Type-C Host.
The EZ-PD™ CCG3 (CYPD3123) available in a 40-QFN package, integrates a complete USB Type-C, USB Power Delivery, USB Billboard, SBU switch and terminations on the AUX lines solution in a single chip. The EZ-PD™ CCG2 (CYPD2122) available in 24-QFN package, is a Type-C port controller which acts a Upstream Facing Port (UFP) and sinks power when connected to the Type-C chargers. This Charge-Through Dongle solution also implements Infineon's USB SuperSpeed Hub controller HX3 (CYUSB3304-68LTXI) available in 68-QFN package, Low-power single chip USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Bridge Controller GX3 (CYUSB3610-68LTXC) available in 68-QFN package.
