Your source of secured, smart sensing solutions
Keeping family members, property and belongings safe has long been a priority for most people. Surveillance systems, increasingly part of an overall smart home concept, are the answer today. At the heart of every solution is a reliable motion detection system tasked with monitoring a certain environment. Reliability is crucial, but not sufficient for a successful design. Often installed outdoors, a successful detection and security system must be weatherproof so it can operate seamlessly whatever the weather. Furthermore, it must be engineered to cover the range the user requires. In today’s era of connectivity, most surveillance systems are linked to the internet or are part of a smart home solution. As a result, they must be fitted with a security solution people can trust. At the same time, they need to also respect people’s right to privacy.

Drawbacks of legacy technology
Traditional surveillance systems, often part of an alarm system, typically rely on legacy technology such as passive infrared (PIR). The big drawback of PIR is that its performance is easily impacted by harsh weather. Additionally, it can be unreliable and trigger false alerts, leading homeowners to experience unnecessary distress. Worst of all, in the hands of an ill-willed person, a basic PIR-based motion detection system can actually be manipulated to not detect an intruder in your home.
Surveillance solutions: what the market demands
For a surveillance system to be successful on the market, it must, above all, provide reliable and accurate motion detection. Ideally, the motion detector has a small form factor and a low price point. It also needs to work indoors and outdoors, be programmable and offer the right connectivity. The latter enables it to trigger an alarm or communicate with other tools, such as email or text message, to notify the user if the system detects movement. Lastly, energy-efficiency is and will continue to be a big topic in the fields of home and building automation and smart homes.
How to enhance your surveillance designs
Essential to engineering a surveillance system that covers all market needs are components from the right partner. Infineon is an expert in radar technologies, with a wide-ranging portfolio of cutting-edge products and solutions. Discover our 24 GHz radar solution, the smallest package on the market. Use it to upgrade your solution from basic motion detection to smart sensing surveillance. There’s also our BGT24M/L family, the largest, most highly integrated 24 GHz ISM band radar transceiver on the market, providing a range of different transmitter and receiver channel configurations. Beyond radar, we also offer all components for power management, magnetic sensor, embedded security and microcontrollers. For those who want a head start, we offer a constantly expanding range of evaluation and demo boards, which support the testing and development of radar in multiple applications.
Combining technologies for greater capabilities
Pairing our radar offering with other sensor technologies enables you to design solutions with multiple sensor capabilities. For instance, by combing radar with camera technology in a solution that monitors a home’s front door, you can program the camera to only operate when someone enters a pre-defined range of the door. This protects the privacy of users outside the detection range. A second example is when a camera’s detection capabilities are limited, radar can jump in. In this case, radar provides the distance and angle information that can be fused into the image data of the camera to determine more precise 3D positioning.
It’s important to note that designs that combine radar with other technologies can lead to real energy savings because they utilize radar’s comparatively low operating costs. Acting as a switch, the radar activates the complementary, more costly to run technology only when necessary.
