Infineon Enables Advanced Wireless CPE Designs for Voice, Video and Data; Industry`s Most Integrated Network Processor Selected by Astor Technology

May 31, 2005 | Market News

Munich, Germany and Taipei, Taiwan – May 31, 2005 – Infineon Technologies AG (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading provider of communication ICs, today announced WildPass, the industry’s most integrated secure dual-band 802.11 a/g wireless network processor system-on-chip (SoC) solution. Featuring multiple on-chip interfaces including the USB 2.0 and Integrated Drive Electronics (IDE), WildPass can be seamlessly integrated into a wide variety of network applications such as VoIP access points, routers and gateways as well as media and print servers. It supports simultaneous Triple Play of voice, video and data for both LAN and WAN connections. The dual-band and WPA2 (802.11i) security functionality of WildPass and its on-board WLAN transceiver enable it to communicate securely with any existing WLAN solution in the market. WiIdPass allows system manufacturers to reduce component costs, system complexity and design cycles hence answering more efficiently growing demand for integrated wireless Triple Play access devices.

The Infineon WildPass has been selected by Astor Technology, an Accton company, and leading supplier for Customer Premises Equipment (CPE), for their Network Attached Storage (NAS) family dubbed Picasso. Astor’s NAS Picasso, uses the IDE interface of WildPass for an internal hard-drive and the USB2.0 host interface to provide support for additional external hard-drives in the LAN network. This simple “plug-n-play” setup means that end users can easily add the Picasso to their premises network allowing important data backup functionality and also a central storage unit for multimedia file sharing including movies, MP3, gaming and more.

“When evaluating the Infineon WildPass we were especially impressed with the varied integration options and high performance at such an economical cost,” says John Lin, Astor’s CEO. “The high integration and feature rich WildPass will position us long term for upgrades to be done in the NAS and Media Storage market while meeting the right performance and price points.”

“The growth of Triple Play services not only require fast internet access but also the capability to store large data files in local networks. Wireless gateway solutions offer a most integrated approach to enabling the transmission of voice, video and data without any wires in homes and small offices,” said Daniel Wong, Vice President and General Manager of Customer Premises Equipment Business Unit at Infineon Technologies. “We continue our focus on network processing SoC’s with the WildPass a highly integrated and flexible system-on-chip solution, that answers this growing market demand by addressing a large variety of network applications,” he added.

According to market research company Gartner, Inc, availability of low cost 802.11a/g gateways and access points will serve to accelerate adoption of 802.11a/g from 63 million units shipped in 2004 to more than 209 million units in 2007.

Highest Design Flexibility with Infineon’s WildPass Solution

WildPass offers also PCM and SPI for Voice over IP applications; MII for connecting to broadband uplink technologies (such as xDSL, fiber or cable-modem) and SDRAM and Flash for external memory devices. Its hardware NAT (Network Address Translation) engine allows numerous PCs or internet enabled devices (video-on-demand media servers, gaming consoles, Personal Media Gateways, etc.) in a network to access the internet at the same time, at guaranteed full wired speeds for both LAN and WAN connections. The WildPass further enhances Infineon’s CPE communications portfolio and can be used in multiple end-to-end solutions together with other Infineon products such as the, Amazon (ADSL2+), VINAX-CPE (VDSL 2) Samurai (Layer 2 Switch) and the VINETIC (VoIP processor).

WildPass will be exhibited at Broadband World Forum in Yokohama, Japan, (May 31 - June 2, 2005), at Computex, Taipei, Taiwan (May 31- June 4, 2005) and SuperComm 2005 in Chicago, USA, (June 6 – 9, 2005).

WildPass is offered in a 289 and 324 BGA package. Samples will be available in June 2005, volume production is planned for July 2005. For further information please go to: www.infineon.com/WildPass
