Infineon Extends its Microcontroller Portfolio with the Introduction of New 8-Bit, 16-bit and 32-bit Devices

Feb 19, 2002 | Market News

Munich, Nuremberg, Germany – 19. February 2002 – Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX) today announced the availability of its new generation of microcontrollers, including a system-on-chip 8-bit product, a new generation of 16-bit microcontrollers with embedded flash, and a new member of its award-winning AUDO family of 32-bit microcontrollers. All microcontroller solutions are designed to meet the performance and reliability requirements of a wide range of drive and control applications, such as machine tools, motor and transmission controls, fans and heating, pumps, air conditioning systems, transportation apparatuses, and white goods, across a wide variety of industries, including factory automation, automotive markets, and consumer products.

Introduced at the Embedded Systems 2002 show, Nuremberg, Germany (19.-21. February 2002), the new microcontrollers reinforce Infineon’s leadership position in this field enabling industrial and automotive designers to greatly reduce development costs by significantly diminishing design cycles, and to accelerate time-to-market
periods.

Infineon’s new microcontrollers include the 8-bit C868, the 16-bit XC161 and XC164, and the 32-bit TC1765. Compared to current products, Infineon’s new controllers fulfill the highest standards in terms of quality and reliability offering an unrivalled failure rate of less than 10 dpm. This means that a maximum of only ten out of one million devices are expected to present a defect. Additionally, Infineon offers special derivatives of these microcontrollers that work over an extended temperature range of -40°C to +125°C, which is mandatory in more demanding industrial and automotive applications. The code compatibility within the families enables smooth migration to the new products.

Technical information on C868 (8-bit microcontroller)

The new C868 is a cost and performance optimized system-on-chip solution specifically designed for consumer and industrial drive applications, such as compressors, pumps, fans, air-conditioning systems; actuators; power supplies; and electronic lamp ballasts. The C868 combines a standard C8051 compatible core with a set of highly integrated and powerful peripherals, including an analog/digital converter (ADC) and a pulse width modulation unit (PWM) that barely stresses the central processing unit (CPU) - even if difficult control tasks have to be performed.

Due to its innovative Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) concept, the C868 provides effective in-system-programming capabilities along with numerous on-chip debugging possibilities, thus significantly reducing development times. With 8 Kbytes of ROM/SRAM, 256 bytes of RAM, and 256 bytes of XRAM, the C868 offers the memory capacity to support sophisticated control algorithms. Additionally, the C868 features instruction cycle times of 300 ns at a clock rate of 40 MHz, and three 16-bit timers/counters.

Technical information on XC161 / XC164 (16-bit microcontrollers)

The XC161 and XC164 are designed for use in a wide range of industrial and automotive applications, such as controls for AC/DC motors and reluctance motors, automation applications, and in-car and field communications systems. Compatible with the C166 standard architecture, the XC161 and XC164 microcontrollers combine the enhanced C166S-V2 core with an extended set of peripherals and on-chip memory. Both products provide embedded flash; a Multiply and Accumulate (MAC) unit, which increases the calculation power; advanced interrupt-handling; high-resolving analog to digital conversion (ADC) capabilities; and an on-chip debug system for enhanced development. The XC164 is available in ROM and flash derivatives.

Technical information on TC1765 (32-bit microcontroller)

The TC1765 is designed for use in industrial and automotive applications, such as three-phase motor and robotic control, engine management, transmission control, and starter generators. The product is based on the 32-bit TriCore™ Unified Processor combining microcontroller unit, Digital Signal Processor (DSP) unit and RISC-processor unit. The highly integrated system-on-chip device features a TwinCAN module with two interconnected CAN nodes for high-efficiency data handling and gateway data transfer. The product’s powerful and flexible peripheral set includes the General Purpose Timer Array (GPTA) which analyses and controls time-driven and event-driven activities. Additionally, the TC1765 offers two analog-to-digital conversion units with 8-bit, 10-bit or 12-bit resolution and 24 analog inputs. The device provides an on-chip memory access architecture to support advanced real-time operating systems.

Availability, Packaging and Pricing

The new microcontroller solutions are available now. The C868 comes in a P-TSSOP-38 and P-DSO-28 package, the XC161 in a P-TQFP-144 package, the XC164 in a P-TQFP-100, and the TC1765 in a P-LBGA-260 package.

In quantities of less than some 50,000, the 8-bit microcontroller, C868, is priced at approximately 1 Euro per unit; the 16-bit controllers, XC161 and XC164, are priced below Euro 12.00 each; and the 32-bit microcontroller, TC1765, is priced below Euro 17.00 per piece.

Infineon will present the new microcontrollers at the Embedded Systems 2002 show (19 – 21. February 2002, Nuremberg, Germany) at booth C05 in Hall 12.
