Infineon announces highly flexible Multi-Service Communication Processor: IWORX-P Connects Traditional Telecommunication Systems With Next Generation Digital Networks

Jul 15, 2002 | Market News

Munich, Germany – July 15, 2002 – Infineon Technologies (FSE/NYSE: IFX), a leading provider of integrated circuits (ICs) for advanced communications systems, today announced sample availability of IWORX-P (InterWORking element neXt generation-Phy), a highly flexible communication controller designed for use in PDH/ATM (Plesiochronous Digital Hierarchy / Asynchronous Transfer Mode) line cards in carrier-class network access systems, including DSLAMs/DLCs and multiservice switches, WAN routers; and 3G mobile base stations/radio network controllers.

IWORX-P is the newest member of Infineon’s IWORX interworking solutions family. It links the timeslot based infrastructure of traditional telecommunication systems to the digital, ATM systems now in wide use and adopted as the standard transmission mode for broadband communications and emerging 3G wireless networks. With an onboard microcontroller, on-chip memory, and support from additional Infineon components, IWORX-P provides the flexibility for equipment manufacturers to produce high integration communications line card solutions with optimized board space, bill of materials and power usage. The system-on-a-chip can be programmed using a high-level message based interface, reducing complex programming requirements to speed time-to-market both for entirely new designs and cost-reduction enhancements to existing products.

“As telecom carriers look to deliver Internet access and value-added voice and data services to subscribers, they need cost-effective line card solutions to combine legacy and new digital networks,” said Christian Wolff, Vice President of Infineon’s Wireline Communications Business Group and General Manager of the Access Business Unit. “IWORX-P enables equipment providers to deliver interworking capability in a range of systems, from central and remote carrier offices to wide-area networks and routers at the enterprise level. It is also an excellent complement to the successfully deployed IWORX controller, and can serve as a solution in base station and radio network applications combining 2G and 3G services in one location.”

About IWORX-P

IWORX-P interfaces ATM network traffic with PDH-based networks, providing the “interworking” connection needed to link between the two distinct communications infrastructures. Used in a system design with Infineon’s QuadFALC Framer and Line Interface Unit a line card supporting up to 8 T1/E1/J1 connections, with up to 16 Mbit/sec data throughput, can be implemented. The IWORX ICs combine the features of Infineon’s earlier generation IWE 8 (Interworking Element for 8 E1/T1 lines) with on-chip memory, microcontroller, Inverse Multiplexing for ATM and Operation, Administration and Maintenance (OAM) functions. An external host interface supports in-system communications with standard microcontrollers. IWORX-P supports all applicable standards and specifications.

Operating Specification, Pricing and Development Platform

IWORX-P ships in a space saving P-BGA-388 package. Its power supply is 3.3 V for I/Os and 1.8 V for the core. Infineon’s high-efficiency, 32-bit TriCore Unified Processor core handles on-board microcontroller duties, and the on-chip SRAM memory is optimized to handle G.804, IMA and AAL1 without the need for external memory. Implemented in a 0.18µm process, the system-on-chip has total power consumption of less than 2W. Now available in sample quantities, at a 1000 unit price of 100 Euro IWORX-P (PXF 4222) will be available in production quantities in the fourth calendar quarter. An evaluation board/reference design system, with all required hardware and device drivers for system development, will be available in late summer.
