Wolfgang Mayrhuber was born on March 22, 1947 in Waizenkirchen, Austria. He studied mechanical engineering at the Höhere Technische Bundeslehranstalt (Federal Higher Technical Institute) in Steyr, Austria and at the Bloor Institute in Canada. In fall 1990, he completed an "Executive Management Training" program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston.
Mr. Mayrhuber spent 40 years working for Deutsche Lufthansa AG. Having started his career as an engineer at the engine overhaul facility in Hamburg, he held a variety of management posts in the Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul division before being appointed Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer Technical on November 1, 1992. In the early 1990s, he headed the rehabilitation team charged with engineering Lufthansa's recovery. Following this restructuring role, Wolfgang Mayrhuber was elected Chairman of the Executive Board of the newly founded Lufthansa Technik AG in October 1994 and exercised an influential role in the company's successful evolution into a leading service provider with subsidiaries around the world. He retained this post until January 1, 2001, when he was appointed a member of the Executive Board of Deutsche Lufthansa AG with responsibility for the passenger airline business.
On April 1, 2002, he was also elected Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board. He has been involved in key areas of corporate development, focusing in particular on the expansion of the STAR Alliance, the establishment of a European airline association through consolidation, the strengthening of logistics, and the service companies Lufthansa Technik, Lufthansa Sky Chefs and Lufthansa Systems.
On June 18, 2003, he took up his position as Chairman of the Executive Board and CEO of Deutsche Lufthansa AG. In March 2005, his contract was extended until December 31, 2010.
Wolfgang Mayrhuber holds various supervisory board mandates. He sits on the supervisory boards of Lufthansa Technik AG, Austrian Airlines AG, BMW AG, Münchener Rückversicherungs-Gesellschaft AG and UBS AG, and is a member of the Board of Directors of the HEICO Corp. (Florida/USA).
