Rethink user experience, car software, and electronics architecture
A key selling point in new vehicles is the user-interface (HMI) electronics technology. Today it is the performance of electronics that is driving consumers‘ buy decisions, and this trend shows no sign of slowing down. Our cars develop from a hardware-driven machine to a software-driven electronics device. By this trend, the importance of electronics and software has grown. So has the complexity— as the main challenge for Automotive electronic designers.
Instrument cluster and infotainment systems
Instrument cluster, digital cockpit systems, and infotainment systems are the central control and user interface systems that manage all necessary functions for entertainment, comfort, connectivity, and safety. Those systems consolidate all the infotainment functions, including car access system, cockpit domain controller, automotive display, telematics, digital cockpit, head unit, smart device integration, premium audio experiences, rear-seat entertainment, eShifter ad steering wheel control, as well as HMI elements like touch, voice and gesture recognition.
Vehicle architecture will become a service-oriented architecture (SOA) based on generalized computing platforms. Today‘s engineers continue to add new connectivity solutions, new comfort applications, and advanced analytics and driver assistance systems. The differentiation will not be in the traditional vehicle hardware anymore but in the user-interface and experience elements powered by advanced electronics.
Infotainment and instrument cluster applications are the main innovation drivers for secure connectivity and user-interface experience. In addition, new smart sensor solutions, and intelligent safety features based on “fail-operational” behaviors support highly automated driving (HAD) capabilities.
New smart sensors and applications will create a high amount of data in the cars which need to be processed and analyzed efficiently. A modularized SOA and over-the-air (OTA) updates will become key requirements to maintain complex software and enable new function-on-demand business models.
