Licensing agreement enables automated standards-based video/audio transcoding for delivery to mobile devices

San Diego, CA - 2.3.2003

Driven by consumer desire for video and audio displayed on mobile devices, Telestream, the leading provider of media encoding and delivery products for the entertainment industry, and PacketVideo Corporation, the global leader in mobilemedia software, have announced an agreement to include PacketVideo’s MPEG-4 encoder as a standard format in Telestream’s FlipFactory™ transcoding automation software. The combined solution enables content owners, mobile operators, and other service providers to automatically encode leading professional digital video and audio formats for optimal delivery to and playback on wireless devices such as cellular phones and PDAs.

“We are excited that Telestream has licensed the PacketVideo MPEG-4 encoding solution for incorporation into FlipFactory,” said Ed Knapp, Chief Technology Officer for PacketVideo. “The combination of FlipFactory and pvServer provides content companies and mobile operators with a robust platform for encoding and distributing compelling multimedia content to mobile consumers. Telestream’s adoption of PacketVideo’s technology signifies continued strong market demand for standards-based encoding solutions needed to drive forward this exciting new medium for mobile devices.”

“The growing acceptance of MPEG-4 as the global standard for wireless video and audio applications opens up an exciting new market segment for us,” said David Heppe, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Telestream. “We are pleased to be partnering with PacketVideo, the mobile streaming leader.”

PacketVideo was the first company to deploy 3GPP-compliant MPEG-4 video streaming to mobile devices and is now the leader in wireless streaming technology. PacketVideo technology has been commercially launched around the world by today’s leading operators and handset manufacturers, and has certified interoperability with other leading solutions providers. The PacketVideo MPEG-4 encoder provides outstanding video quality with more accurate color balance, automatic scene change detection, smoother video, and music at bitrates yielding up to CD quality.

FlipFactory is used by leading media companies worldwide to automate the labor-intensive process of acquiring vast amounts of media from a variety of professional video systems, such as servers and editing systems, and converting it into leading digital formats. In addition, FlipFactory automatically delivers the resulting files to distribution servers, such as pvServer, for final distribution to destination devices.

The PacketVideo MPEG-4 format is now available with all FlipFactory products and as a free upgrade for existing FlipFactory customers.
