Ventures News: PacketVideo Mpeg-4 Software Powers Samsung Processor for Symbian OS-based Multimedia Phones
Cannes - GSM World Congress - 2.19.2003
Responding to customer requests for MPEG-4 support in processors for wireless phones, PacketVideo Corporation, the global leader in mobilemedia software, and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., the worlds second largest semiconductor manufacturer, demonstrated mobilemedia applications including PacketVideos MPEG-4 streaming video solution for Samsungs S3C2410 application processor.
The application processor, developed by Samsung Electronics System LSI Division and embedded with PacketVideo mobilemedia applications, is a system solution for smart phone manufacturers that will significantly reduce development time for adding exciting high-quality multimedia streaming and playback capabilities to mobile devices based on the Symbian platform.
The solution includes Samsungs recently announced System-in Package (SiP) Application Processor, a complete Infineon GSM/GPRS Class 10 modem, Symbian OS and PacketVideos wireless MPEG-4 decoder and encoder solutions.
Were seeing accelerating deployments of advanced multimedia capabilities by handset manufacturers and network operators around the world, said Dr. James Brailean, PacketVideo CEO and co-founder. PacketVideos work with Samsung demonstrates that our 3GPP standards-compliant embedded solutions provide handset manufacturers with a significant advantage by enabling them to enhance the capability, power and value of their products and get compelling new multimedia handsets to market as quickly as possible.
PacketVideo software has been optimized for the S3C2410 development platform to combine maximum performance. To demonstrate the processing performance of the S3C2410, PacketVideo has optimized its technology to highlight the following advanced multimedia and messaging reference applications:
· MPEG-4 Video Player with AAC/GSM-AMR Audio Decoder for video playback
· MPEG-4 Video Encoder with GSM-AMR Audio Encode to File for video capture
· MP3 Audio Playback for high quality music playback
· JPEG Still Image Capture and Viewing
These applications were optimized for the S3C2410 by PacketVideo, and the multimedia features are fully 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) compliant. PvPlayer also offers proven interoperability with PacketVideos pvServer, a leading 3GPP, 3GPP2 and MPEG-4 mobilemedia distribution system, as well as other wireless multimedia video servers.
Smartphone designers are now able to create powerful, feature-rich mobile devices with compelling video and other multimedia applications while significantly reducing design cycle time. said Dr. Yun Tae Lee, Vice President, Samsung Electronicss Mobile Solution Project. Because the S3C2410 application processor, combined with PacketVideos 3GPP standards-based MPEG4 expertise in the Symbian environment, comes with everything needed for wireless multimedia, Samsung becomes a one-stop shop for multimedia phone manufacturers.
The first public demonstration will take place at the 3GSM World Congress Conference, held in Cannes, France, Feb. 18 -21 where prototype board- level smart phones will make voice and data calls at Samsungs booth, Stand D57 Hall 2.
