Expansion at the development site in Graz completed.
In October the Infineon Development Center in Graz has moved into its new premises Metahof V in the Metahofgasse in Graz. The new building provides space for 290 workplaces in research and development as well as state-of-the-art measuring technology areas. Infineon is thus expanding the existing space at the Campus Metahof.
Sabine Herlitschka, CEO Infineon Austria: "The future-oriented technologies developed in Graz are in high demand worldwide in many everyday applications such as vehicles, smart phones, payment cards or passports. Especially the current times of crisis around the Corona pandemic have demonstrated even more clearly how important investment in research, technology and innovation is in Austria and Europe".
Metahof V completes the Campus Metahof
Infineon has already been represented in four buildings at the Campus Metahof in Graz. Now Metahof V is the fifth: The new building offers space for 290 R&D workplaces on an area of around 5,700 m², of which around 880 m² are used as ultra-modern measurement technology areas. The building was developed and constructed by Bauwerk Projektentwicklung GmbH, and Infineon is the tenant of this first, recently completed construction phase. A second construction phase with around 70 workplaces will be completed in spring 2021 and used by additional tenants. Particular emphasis for the construction was laid on modern office concepts, generous areas for innovative information exchange and energy-efficient building technology. For example, for the future it is planned to use the waste heat generated in the measuring technology area as heating for the buildings Metahof III, IV and V via an intelligent heat recovery system.
Stefan Rohringer, Head of the Infineon Development Centre Graz: "The new building completes the Campus Metahof and gives us room for future growth. With around 430 employees and about 100 students, we are now a major player and interesting employer for skilled workers in the technology location Styria". Infineon now has a total of around 13,500 m² of office and measuring technology space on the Campus Metahof in Graz, in Schloss Metahof, Metahof II, III, IV and V.
From cars to smartphones
Graz is home to one of the largest research and development sites as well as the global competence centre for contactless, security and sensor applications within the Infineon Group. In the new building complex, research is mainly focused on innovative solutions for the automotive and consumer markets. This includes the development of tire pressure sensors or radar sensors for automated and autonomous driving as well as 3D image sensor chips. These reliably detect the environment in vehicles or ensure secure face authentication in smartphones, for example. The developers are also working on silicon microphones, which can be used as in-ear earphones or in smartphones to provide a crystal-clear listening
The completion of the expansion at the Graz site also coincides with the anniversary year of Infineon Austria: 50 years of Infineon in Austria are being celebrated, as production started at the Villach site on October 1, 1970. The Infineon Development Center Graz was founded in 1998 and has been located at the Metahof site since then.
