Infineon Villach: multi-story car park for over 900 vehicles completed. Construction work for the chip factory and the research building going to plan.

Jul 8, 2019 | Business & Financial Press

Villach, July 8, 2019 – Today the multi-story car park constructed as part of the expansion of the Infineon site in Villach was put into service. With space for 924 vehicles, “alongside the existing parking areas it provides an essential infrastructure prerequisite for the extension works, as to some extent the new buildings are being constructed on existing car parks,” says Oliver Heinrich, CFO of Infineon Technologies Austria AG. “In parallel, within the framework of our comprehensive mobility management we have extended the cycle parking areas to 800 spaces and introduced the “Jobticket” for all Infineon employees in Austria”, Oliver Heinrich adds. The “Jobticket” enables employees to travel to work free of charge on public transport. Over 330 employees already used this offer since it was introduced in March 2019. Infineon also welcomes the plans by the city of Villach to expand public transport in the region.

Chip factory and research building: Extensions going to plan At the Villach site, Infineon is investing over € 1.6 billion in a fully-automated chip factory for power electronics, as well as a research building: The construction work for the chip factory began in May 2019, with the start of production planned for the first half of 2021. The shell construction work is currently underway, with the floor slab and the first mainstays and walls being erected. The chip factory will create 400 highly skilled workplaces, and is currently the largest privately financed investment in Austria.

Construction work on the new research building has been ongoing since December 2018: The structural engineering works are currently taking place, and the walls and ceilings of the upper floors are already being constructed. Around 650 research and development workplaces will be created here by 2020, 350 of them for additional employees, who will mainly work on developments for the automotive sector – for example power electronics for electromobility or energy-saving chips for a wide variety of in-car applications – as well as industrial applications. In future this building will also house measurement technology areas, as well as a new canteen area with an in-house kitchen and a link to the existing buildings.

A total of around 400 employees of the construction companies are currently working on the two construction sites. Information about the extension work at Infineon in Villach and the current construction status is available at any time here.
