Wearable Payment
Payment wearables are small but fashionable everyday objects worn on the body featuring an integrated chip to enable payments or multi-application use cases. Equipped with security technologies from Infineon, wearables are supporting ever-more functions on a shrinking footprint delivered in innovative form factors that consume less or even no power.
Equipped with NFC embedded capabilities, smart accessories/wearables and are enhancing daily convenience and efficiency by allowing users to pay at a store, access a public transit system, or enter office buildings.
Field-powered wearables are an easy and convenient way for users to pay at stores or events using an unobtrusive device that does not need a battery. Typical examples include accessories such as wristbands, key fobs, non-connected rings, and conventional watches. These wearables improve the overall user experience by eliminating the need to carry cash, cards and wallets. Tap-and-go functionality also accelerates the payment process in many cases by eliminating the need for queuing.
User adoption of wearable payment form factors hinges on the right security, however. Users want to know that they can trust the form factor they have chosen. Our NFC security chips are being embedded into wearables to offer robust security coupled with fast transactions speeds at the point of sale. For added security on high-value transactions, the user can enter a PIN similar to that used with conventional credit cards. We offer pre-certified solutions for field-powered wearable applications, reducing the certification effort for OEMs looking to support payment schemes.
Battery-powered wearables are growing in importance and popularity as they support ever more applications and can be programmed in the field. Typical examples include smartwatches, smart rings, fitness trackers, and feature watches. These battery-powered devices enable the owner to pay with the card of their choice as they can store multiple card credentials. They also support other applications such as access or ticketing. Increasingly flexible and sophisticated authentication mechanisms - Consumer Device Cardholder Verification Method (CDCVM) - using for example biometric sensors or face ID are enabling new-found levels of convenience as shoppers no longer need to enter PINs on POS terminals in case the transaction volume is in a predefined range.
