Gate clamping
Certain pointsmust be notedwhen selecting diodes. For TVS diodes, there is usually a
wide span between the lower and the upper breakdown voltage, as shown in the
datasheet extract of
In addition to this tolerance range, the temperature
dependence of the minimum operating voltage of the TVSmust be taken into account,
as it increases along with the temperature. To keep the short circuit current within
manageable values and maximise the time available to turn off the short circuit, it is
therefore necessary to reduce the nominal, positive gate voltage of 15V to a value of
14V, for example, so that, when all the factors are taken into account, the maximum
gate voltagewill not be too high.
