In state-of-the art windmills, power semiconductors are the core components for efficient energy generation and –use. They are the interface between the electrical wind energy which is generated in an uncontrolled mode, and the electrical energy optimized for grid supply with a firm frequency. Power semiconductors also make sure that the windmill rotors are adjusted in exactly the right way for making best use of the wind energy.
For long-distance energy transmission from for example offshore windmills to the grid ashore, power semiconductors are of essential importance. By HVDC-transmission, a low loss energy transportation via submarine cables is being realized.
Based on their high reliability and quality, power semiconductors made by Infineon are used in wind power stations all over the world.
